🚨 Over 700 Vehicles Stopped in Operation Dark Night 🚨

North Wales Police have stopped over 700 vehicles as part of Operation Dark Night - a seasonal road safety campaign urging everyone to

With darker evenings and winter weather setting in, officers carried out roadside checks to make sure vehicles were safe and drivers were fit to drive.

Several licences were revoked due to poor eyesight - a reminder that drivers must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away.

The campaign also included joint patrols with the British Horse Society to promote safe driving around horse riders, and safety advice was shared for all road users including cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists.

👮‍♀️ Sgt Emma Birrell said: “Our work continues every day to keep people safe. Sadly, ignoring safety advice can lead to serious consequences - we’re here to help prevent that.”

✅ Stay visible
✅ Slow down in poor conditions
✅ Look out for vulnerable road users

A man has been jailed after leaving another man with life-changing injuries following a collision in Prestatyn in December 2020.

41-year-old James Price of Tewkesbury Road, Gloucester appeared before Mold Crown Court today (Monday) after previously pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He was sentenced to three years in prison and disqualified from driving for four and a half years.

The collision, which took place on the evening of 9th December 2020, happened on Bodnant Avenue with the junction of Nant Hall Road in Prestatyn involving a Peugeot 208 and a pedestrian.

Price stopped his vehicle, dragged the pedestrian into the middle of the road and left the scene without calling for assistance.

At the time of the collision North Wales Police appealed for witnesses to come forward and following a complex and lengthy investigation, Price was charged.

Sergeant Duncan Logan of the North Wales Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “This case is a stark reminder of how dangerous driving can destroy lives in an instant. The victim in this case has suffered life-changing leg injuries because of James Price’s actions and our thoughts remain with him and his family.

“I would like to thank all those who bravely came forward to provide us with the crucial information we needed to pursue a charge against Price.

“We would urge all drivers to think carefully about the consequences of their decisions behind the wheel – one moment of recklessness can change lives forever.”

We've got another update from yesterday...Rota 1 located a vehicle in St Asaph, that was suspected to be used to commit crime.

The car failed to stop for us so we pursued it through Denbigh, Ruthin and into Pwllglas where the occupants abandoned the vehicle and made off on foot.

With support from North Wales Police Dogs, alliance armed policing, local policing and NPAS (National Police Air Service) 🚁 we located the 3 occupants hiding in a barn.

All three were arrested and all remain in custody 🔐

We'd like to thank members of the public who assisted yesterday - diolch yn fawr iawn 😊👍🏼

We will not tolerate dangerous driving on our roads and we'll continue to make our roads safe.

Another two vehicles seized yesterday (Thursday) as part of our ongoing campaign - including a vehicle which was used by the driver to collect his son from primary school on Anglesey. Driver had no valid licence or insurance (we did give them a lift home...because we're nice people 😊 ).

The other vehicle was spotted being driven on the A*5 near Bangor.

Operation Scalis is a UK-wide initiative led by MIB (Motor Insurers’ Bureau) to tackle uninsured driving. Protecting the public and keeping our roads safe for everyone is our priority and removing uninsured drivers from our roads helps to do that.

Rota 2 were out in Holyhead and Bangor today (Thursday) where 320 vehicles were stopped and drivers were asked to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres – the primary legal vision standard for driving in the UK.

Unfortunately, seven drivers failed the eyesight test and were taken home by officers – including individuals who failed to read the number plate at 4, 8, 10.5 and 13 metres.

The DVLA will now be informed of all those who failed as part of Cassie’s Law. The law came into effect in February 2013 following the death of 16-year-old Cassie McCord from Colchester, who was killed on her way to school by an 87-year-old driver, just three days after he had failed an eyesight test and refused to surrender his licence.

Now, any driver who failed the roadside test could have their licence revoked straight away as well as receive three penalty points and be fined up to £1,000.

The checks were done as part of a national campaign to improve road safety - which also resulted one one man being arrested after testing positive for co***ne at the roadside in Holyhead and several others being found with defective tyres, failing to wear seatbelts and driving without insurance.

Sadly, a man has died following a road traffic collision on Anglesey earlier today (Friday, 31st October).

Shortly after 1:30pm we were notified by the Welsh Ambulance Service of a one-vehicle road traffic collision on the A5025 at Bull Bay near Amlwch.

The red coloured Nissan Micra was being driven from the direction of Amlwch and collided with a wall.

The emergency services attended, including the Air Ambulance, however sadly, despite the efforts of everyone involved, including members of the public who assisted, the male passenger from the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. His net of kin have been informed.

The female driver was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd by ambulance with what are believed to be minor injuries.

Sergeant Leigh McCann of the Roads Crime Unit said: “Our thoughts remain with the man’s family at this difficult time.

“We are urging anybody who may have been travelling along the A5025 through Bull Bay and who may have captured dash cam footage of the collision, including the moment leading up to it, to contact us as soon as possible.”

Anybody with information is urged to contact North Wales Police via the website or by calling 101, quoting reference number C168879.

Reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads remains our priority and removing uninsured drivers from our roads helps to do just that.

Many will see uninsured driving as a victimless crime at best, or as only impacting on the profits of large insurance companies at worst, but this is not the case. Uninsured drivers are significantly more likely to cause a death or injury on the road and are also often involved in wider road crime.

We witness far too often the devastation a road collision has on those involved, their families and the wider community. When this also involves an uninsured driver, there is also the financial cost associated with it.

We are urging all drivers to respect other road users and drive insured. Protecting the public and keeping our roads safe for everyone is our priority and removing uninsured drivers from our roads helps to do that.
