Ergonomics isn’t one-size-fits-all 👇

The risks faced by desk-based employees are very different to those in manual roles, and the same approach won’t work for both.

From posture and screen setup to lifting techniques and task design, understanding ergonomics in office-based roles vs manual roles is key to reducing risk, absence, and long-term MSK issues.

In our latest blog, we break down the differences and share how employers can take a more targeted, proactive approach.

🚆 What is a PTS Medical?

If you have employees working on or near the rail network, a PTS (Personal Track Safety) Medical is a key requirement, but what does it actually involve?

Here’s a quick breakdown 👇

🔍 What does it involve?
A PTS medical assesses whether an individual is fit to work safely in a rail environment. This typically includes:
Vision and hearing checks
Blood pressure and general health review
Screening for drugs and alcohol
Medical history and any conditions that could impact safety

👷 Who needs one?
Anyone working on or near the tracks, including:
Track workers
Engineers and maintenance staff
Contractors accessing rail infrastructure

📅 How often is it required?
PTS medicals are usually valid for 2 years (or annually for some individuals depending on age or medical conditions). Staying on top of expiry dates is essential to avoid disruption.

Keeping your workforce compliant isn’t just about ticking a box, it’s about protecting your people, your projects, and overall safety on the network.

If you’re unsure when your team’s medicals are due or need support managing them, we’re here to help.

Small ergonomic changes can make a big difference 👇

If your employees are spending long hours at a desk, these quick wins can help reduce discomfort and prevent longer-term issues:

✔️ Desk height
Adjust so forearms are roughly parallel to the floor, with shoulders relaxed.

✔️ Screen positioning
Top of the screen at (or just below) eye level, about an arm’s length away.

✔️ Break frequency
Encourage short, regular breaks, even 2–3 minutes every 30 minutes helps reduce strain.

These simple adjustments can improve comfort, reduce MSK issues, and support productivity, especially for hybrid and remote teams.

💬 Need more tailored support? Our ergonomic assessments provide practical, individual recommendations for your team.

When it comes to healthcare roles, fitness for work isn’t just important - it’s essential.

That’s where Health Clearance Medicals come in.

Before starting a role, healthcare workers must be able to demonstrate they are fit, compliant, and safe to work with patients. A structured health clearance process helps ensure exactly that.

Our Health Clearance Medicals are tailored to the individual and their level of patient contact, assessing key areas to minimise risk and support safe working environments.

✔ Ensures compliance with healthcare standards
✔ Reduces risk of infection transmission
✔ Confirms fitness for role before employment begins

It’s not just about meeting requirements, it’s about protecting both staff and patients from day one.

Ever wondered what happens once you send a management referral? 🤔

For many managers, the uncertainty is what causes delays.

In reality, the process is simple and structured:

✔ Appointment is booked with the employee
✔ A clinical assessment is carried out
✔ A clear report is provided
✔ Practical, work-focused recommendations are given

No guesswork. No grey areas. Just clear guidance to help you move forward with confidence.

Management referrals aren’t just about assessing health, they’re about giving managers the clarity they need to take the next step.
