Not All Back Pain Needs Time Off Work❌

When an employee reports back pain, the immediate assumption is often that they need time away from work. But in many cases, that isn’t necessary.

For many musculoskeletal conditions, remaining active and staying in work (with the right support) can actually help recovery.

Physiotherapists can assess the underlying cause of the pain and recommend practical steps to manage it safely at work, such as:

• Targeted exercises to improve strength and mobility
• Advice on posture and movement patterns
• Temporary adjustments to tasks or duties
• Guidance to prevent the issue from worsening

Sometimes the best support isn’t time off, it’s the right intervention at the right time.

OHP vs Nurse Review: Why Escalations Matter

Health surveillance isn’t just about completing a test, it’s about acting on the results.

If an employee’s surveillance triggers escalation (for example HAVS Tier 4 or abnormal spirometry), re-booking with a nurse isn’t the correct pathway. At that stage, the assessment has moved beyond screening and requires medical review by an Occupational Health Physician (OHP).

In our latest blog, we explain:

• The difference between a nurse review and an OHP review
• Why escalation can’t be bypassed
• What the Health and Safety Executive expects
• What the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 says about employer and employee responsibilities

Following the correct pathway protects your workforce, and your organisation.

“When employees say they’re exhausted, it isn’t always workload.”

Low energy at work is often attributed to pressure, deadlines or long hours - but sometimes the root cause is physiological, not organisational.

Persistent fatigue can be linked to:
• Low iron levels
• Vitamin deficiencies (such as B12 or Vitamin D)
• Blood glucose imbalance
• Thyroid function issues

Without clinical insight, these factors can go unnoticed, impacting concentration, productivity and overall wellbeing.

Well Person Medicals provide data-led health screening to help identify underlying issues that may be affecting energy and performance.

For HR teams, this means moving beyond generic wellbeing initiatives and offering meaningful, preventative support that can make a measurable difference.

🌿 March Wellness Focus: Nutrition, Energy & Ergonomics

As we head into March, we’re focusing on three key areas that directly impact workplace performance and long-term wellbeing:

🥗 Nutrition – Supporting sustained concentration and overall health
⚡ Energy – Reducing fatigue and improving productivity
🪑 Ergonomics – Preventing discomfort and musculoskeletal risk

These aren’t just wellbeing buzzwords, they influence absence levels, engagement, and day-to-day performance.

Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing practical insights, guidance, and simple strategies employers can use to support their teams in these areas.

If you’re reviewing your wellbeing priorities for the new financial year, this is a great place to start.

❤️Heart Health Month

Heart health isn’t always visible, and assumptions in the workplace can lead to risk being overlooked.

This post breaks down some common myths vs facts around heart health and what they mean for employers.

Because understanding the reality helps managers make safer, more informed decisions when supporting employees at work.

“Without occupational health input, managers are often left guessing.”

When an employee has a health condition impacting their role, decisions still need to be made, but without clear medical guidance, that can lead to:

• Inconsistent adjustments
• Over-accommodation that isn’t sustainable
• Under-support that risks worsening the issue
• Increased legal risk under the Equality Act 2010

Management referrals provide structured, evidence-based advice, helping employers make informed, fair and defensible decisions.

It’s not about questioning capability. It’s about protecting both the employee and the organisation, while supporting a safe and sustainable working environment.

How ergonomically sound is your workstation - right now?

Many employees don’t realise there’s an issue until discomfort turns into persistent neck, shoulder or back pain. A quick self-check can highlight early risks before they develop into something more significant.

Here are 4 simple ergonomic checks employees can do today:

• Can you sit back fully in your chair with your back supported?
• Is the top of your screen roughly at eye level?
• Are your shoulders relaxed (not raised or hunched) when typing?
• Are your feet flat on the floor or supported by a footrest?

Small adjustments can make a big difference, but sometimes a more detailed review is needed.

If the answer is “no” to more than one, it may be time for an assessment.

Return to work is more than a date.

After a mental health-related absence, getting an employee “back” isn’t the same as helping them settle back in.

Confidence may be fragile. Resilience may be reduced. Even familiar tasks can feel overwhelming at first.

Counselling can play an important role during this phase, supporting employees to process their experience, rebuild confidence, and adjust back into work in a way that’s sustainable, not rushed.

When emotional wellbeing is supported alongside practical adjustments, returns to work are more likely to last - benefiting both the individual and the organisation.

Supporting mental health doesn’t stop at the point of return. Often, that’s where it really begins.
