Òur first Baby First Aid awareness session in conjunction with Tiaki Pregnancy and Family Centre is set for Saturday 10th February.

Our classes are fully interactive and focus on quality of learning, because of this we separate baby and children's awareness sessions for increased focus.

I am proud to say that on Monday 16th October I will be embracing day at Tiaki Pregnancy and Family Centre and offering FREE CPR sessions.

There is no need to book, just turn up at one of the following times to learn how to perform CPR (in the hope you never need to try but you are prepared anyway):

10am - Baby CPR
11am - Child and Adult CPR
12.30pm - Baby CPR
13.30pm - Child and Adult CPR

This week I had the pleasure of teaching my daughters u16 girls rugby team.

The girls took part in an awareness session that will help them to support their team mates, opposition and match officials should the need arise.
- how nice would it be to know if anything was to happen that the players on the pitch could EFFECTIVELY support their first aider/match officials.

Not restricted to rugby this session is appropriate for ANY grass roots sport and for players from age 14 (ish) to 99.

It is important that all the training and education materials we use are high quality.

While having a well earned break in Northumberland this week, I've been pleased to see how many Public Access Defibrillators (PAD's) there are to support local communities and visitors alike.

The recommendation for PAD's is for them to "be placed where they are most likely to be needed, in a prominent position, with clear signs to direct people to them." Thankfully, the gaurdians of these two followed this advice.

To make them even more accessible in an emergency, they can also be registered with the local ambulance service on The Circuit https://www.thecircuit.uk/

Sadly, recently released figures from the NHS show admissions to hospital for severe allergic and anaphylactic reactions have more than doubled in the last 20 years, continuing the worrying trend in increasing admissions for these types of reactions.

It is important for schools, youth organisations, sports clubs, employers and friends or family of people with severe allergies to make sure they are prepared for what to do in an emergency.

Defibrillators are thankfully becoming more of a common site in our workplaces and on our high streets and leisure venues, and this along with secondary school pupils being taught life-saving methods such as CPR as part of existing requirements for schools to teach first aid as part of the curriculum, means that chances of surviving cardiac arrest for all state school pupils, teachers and visitors to schools, and hopefully those in our communities have risen dramatically.
The task now is to make sure defibrillators are accessible (either within a school or venue, or to the wider community as appropriate), regularly checked, and registered with the local ambulance service so that they can be used when needed.
