The Dyslexia Test - Can I use it to get a job that needs good written English?

It is sometimes suggested that because dyslexia is a disability, then once the disability has been diagnosed employers should make allowances for this. This is unfortunately not the case. While a statement that says that in the view of this expert it is believed that the individual has dyslexia can be used to gain extra time in some exams, it will not allow a dyslexic person to take on a job where the ability to read and write English without errors is needed.

Thus an individual who wishes to train as a teacher may have to take a test to measure his/her abilities in English, and having dyslexia may not excuse the individual from having to pass the literacy test. If you are thinking of becoming a teacher it is best to check with the university first

The Dyslexia Test - Is it official?

There is no such thing as an “official” dyslexia test – at least not in the UK, which is where the Dyslexia Centre is based.

In Britain, the nearest thing there is to an official test is one undertaken by an educational psychologist who specialises in dyslexia. The psychologist will conduct a personal interview with the individual concerned, and then write a detailed report. Charges vary, but £300 to £350 is not unusual.

What the psychologist will rarely do is provide materials or support to help the individual overcome some of his/her problems. Thus you will get a statement based on what the psychologist has found – but that’s as far as it goes.

This is in contrast with the Dyslexia Test. Our test clearly cannot be as thorough as that gained from a personal interview and tests, but we do provide a report (normally about six pages of A4) and a set of materials for the individual to help overcome the most significant problem area that we have identified

One of the most common questions we are asked concerns what schools are required to do by law in relation to dyslexic pupils and students.
So in response we have published an article on this very subject. It is at http://dyslexia.ac/index.php/special-needs-and-the-law
Meanwhile if you are a parent of a child who might have dyslexia, and would like more information about our own test for dyslexia, which is available on line, that can be found at http://dyslexia.ac/index.php/the-dyslexia-test-parents

Dyslexia:

Knowing what to do to help a dyslexic child is difficult. For while all people who are dyslexic have problems learning how to spell, it is also the case that each individual is very likely to have her or his own set of dyslexia related problems.

That is why having school pupils and students undertake a simple diagnostic test which not only reveals their ability at spelling but also explores their ability recognise and create rhymes, and to recognise printed words quickly can be very helpful.

It is also important to understand if the individual has any difficulty perceiving particular colour combinations, and to see if there is any difficulty at the interface between the short and long term memory.

This is why the Dyslexia Centre developed its on-line diagnostic test for dyslexia. Those who take the test can get not only a diagnosis of possible dyslexia, but the test also gives guidance on the key issues the individual is facing and how they can be tackled.
