I know wigs and toppers are expensive, I’ve lived this journey personally and now professionally.
I see them as an investment. With proper care, maintenance and occasional repairs, a quality piece should last far longer than people expect.
What often gets overlooked are the hidden costs behind a responsibly made wig, which can often lead to the belief that brands are overcharging.
Firstly, let’s note the obvious - the craftsmanship & hair sourcing.
Each wig is created by skilled craftspeople and involves a lot of detailed, manual work and artistry. Quality hair is not cheap and requires fair payment, careful collection and minimal processing to protect its integrity and longevity.
Not all wigs are made equal and manufacturers price them accordingly.
Import & export
At Loss 2 Lace we do everything properly and legally.
That means, in addition to shipping, bank & currency conversion fees, paying import duty when wigs arrive in the UK and also declaring the full, correct value when sending wigs internationally.
This likely results in customs charges for customers, which are outside of my control, but it also means we’re running an ethical and transparent business, which is important to me.
The unseen day-to-day costs
Hair products, packaging, aftercare guides, free gifts, room rental, website hosting, insurance, accountancy, booking systems and time.
So much time.
Returns
Payment providers charge fees on every transaction and it’s roughly triple for international transactions.
In the UK & EU, returns within the 14-day cooling-off period must legally be refunded in full, including delivery meaning businesses absorb shipping and transaction costs.
For international (outside of the EU) returns, a small restocking fee simply helps cover those unavoidable charges and for UK and EU where these return costs are absorbed, they do need to be factored into our overall costings when setting our prices.
I will always try to be fair and human, and where I can, I’ll work outside of my T&Cs but clear policies are what allow small businesses like mine to continue doing this work properly, ethically and with care.
