What a busy weekend!

🙏🏼Thankyou to all our now fully trained first aiders who attended our courses this weekend - you were all amazing!

⭐️The mini medics were fab on Saturday and can now safely say they are ready to confidently care for young children and keep them safe.

⭐️The parents and carers took in so much information this afternoon and were a great group to teach, Thankyou!

There is a lot of fear around defibrillators, mainly ‘what will happen if I use it wrong?’😬

😀All of our courses including our mini medics teach you how these life saving devices work and how easy they are to use! (They can even help you out with chest compression timings!!)

⭐️ With so many of them popping up around our community it’s so important that as many people as possible are confident in using them as they really do save lives! 🤩

Why not book onto one of our courses and learn a life saving skill this new year! 👇🏽

's are becoming widespread throughout the UK and we believe it is equally important for children to know; what they are, why they are used and how they work!

🥳With the festive season comes a higher risk of household accidents.

👨‍👩‍👦‍👦There are often a lot more people around and a lot more distractions. 🌪

☕️Hot drinks can often be accidentally either left in reach of children or knocked over in the chaos of Christmas. 🎄

Below is an example from our house last year that shows how to treat a hot drink burn. 😬

Christmas day accident!
On Christmas day my 16 month old got hold of a freshly made cup of tea and managed to pour the scalding liquid down his front.

I was lucky enough that Frances (who teaches the first aid courses) is my mum and was on hand to think rationally. Even though I am a paediatric nurse and pretty calm in most situations my brain had gone into mummy mode and I just wanted to comfort him. I knew she was right, I have done the 1st aid course with her not long ago, but common sense does just leave you in these situations.

What he really needed was to have his burns treated asap. I was told to sit in the bath while my sister held the shower hose over his body and he screamed - He really screamed. All i wanted to do was wrap him up and cuddle him but kept him there for 20 mins. I can tell you now that 20 mins seemed like over an hour to me. He was shivering from the cold and it was just horrible to experience.

He now has a slight red mark under his chin where the water didn't quite reach and I think I was more traumatised by the incident than he was!

It just goes to show that everything taught in a first aid course is common sense but sometimes you need to reinforce the knowledge to give you the confidence that what you are doing is right (even if the child doesn't think so!)

I saw a video a couple of days ago of a baby with breathing difficulties. It was a great example of what to look out for this winter especially as we are entering Bronchiolitis and flu season!
If your baby is showing signs of:
💨 Sucking in around their ribs or sternum
💨 Sucking in their trachea (throat)
💨 Breathing very fast or long frequent pauses
💨Grunting with the effort of trying to breath or making strange noises
💨Pale, blue or floppy and not responding as they normally do
It is time to get them seen ASAP!

As I can’t find the video I’ll share one of my little Max a while ago suffering from sleep apnea which although not quite the same, shows very similar signs that you need to get help for your baby or small person.
