Catch-up clinics are being held for teenagers and young adults who have not had an important meningitis vaccination.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is holding walk-in clinics for young people in Year 9 and up to the age of 25 who have previously missed their MenACWY vaccination appointment.

Walk-in clinics are being held every Saturday (starting March 21) until further notice at the following locations:
- Barry Hospital, Colcot Road, CF62 8YH (9am-4.30pm)
- Maelfa Wellbeing Hub, Llanedeyrn, Cardiff, CF23 9PN (9am-4.30pm)

Young people aged 13-14 (school Year 9) are invited by GPs in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan to receive this vaccine as part of their routine schedule but sometimes these appointments can get missed.

The MenACWY vaccine protects against meningococcal disease type A, C, W and Y.

While rare, meningococcal disease can be very serious and require urgent hospital treatment. It can lead to life-changing disabilities such as amputations, hearing loss, brain damage and scars.

If parents of younger children would like information about their meningitis B and pneumococcal vaccination status - both of which are given to children as part of their routine vaccination schedule up to the age of 2 - please call the vaccination service on 02921 841234 (lines open Mon-Fri 9am-4.45pm). You can also book any missed doses with your GP.

MENINGITIS

Understandably we have had a lot of queries about the Meningitis outbreak in Kent and in particular patients requesting to have the Meningitis B Vaccination. In Wales the Men B vaccine is routinely offered to babies at 8 weeks of age, 12 weeks of age and 12-13 months of age.

Currently there is no vaccination process for children or adults outside of these age groups.

Men B for children over the age of 2 years and/or adults can be sourced privately, unless the person is in an at risk group and we would then be guided by the patient’s consultant. More information can be found on the Public Health Wales website.

The Cardiff and Vale Weight Management Service is seeing an increasing number of people enquiring about injectable weight-loss medication, which currently has a waiting list of seven and a half years.

Before being considered for such specialist treatment, we expect all patients referred to the service to engage with our expert dietitians who will provide support to help make and sustain positive dietary, lifestyle and behaviour changes.

Rather than being a standalone prescription service, our multidisciplinary team of professionals are on hand to support a patient’s weight loss alongside any medication as set out by NICE guidelines for the NHS.

We are also aware of people using private, unregulated providers to access these drugs. We would strongly encourage anyone considering a private weight-loss prescription to obtain it from a reputable provider, such as a private hospital with a weight management consultant, or a reputable pharmacy.

For more information on the Cardiff and Vale Weight Management Service, please go to the Keeping Me Well website or call 029 21847681.

People in Wales can now track their NHS waiting list progress on the NHS Wales app🙌

The latest update lets people check their waiting list status, view hospital referrals and appointment details, and access information to help manage their health while waiting for treatment.

More than 650,000 people have already registered to use the bilingual app. The app aims to improve access to healthcare services for people registered with a GP in Wales and is a key part of the Welsh Government’s digital transformation strategy for healthcare.
