Anti-bullying Week

This week is anti-bullying week and the Anti-bullying Alliance would like us all to pledge to: Choose Respect. This theme is to empower people to do something positive to counter the harm and hurt that bullying causes.

πŸ’™ Ask if someone’s OK.

πŸ’™ Bullying affects millions of lives and can leave us feeling hopeless. But it doesn’t have to be this way. If we challenge it, we can change it. And it starts by reaching out.

πŸ’™ Whether it’s in school, at home, in the community or online, let’s reach out and show each other the support we need. Reach out to someone you trust if you need to talk. Reach out to someone you know is being bullied. Reach out and consider a new approach.

πŸ’™ And it doesn’t stop with young people. From teachers to parents and influencers to politicians, we all have a responsibility to help each other reach out. Together, let’s be the change we want to see. Reflect on our own behaviour, set positive examples and create kinder communities.

πŸ’™ It takes courage, but it can change lives. So, this Anti-Bullying Week, let’s come together and reach out to stop bullying.

Introducing young children to Remembrance Day

One of the best ways to open up the conversation with children is through crafts. Sit down together and decorate a Remembrance cross, colouring pictures of poppies or even making a wreath together.

Here are a few facts you could share:

The poppy became the official symbol of Remembrance in World War 1 as they grew in the battlefields due to the lime rich soil from the bombing.

We observe the 2 minute silence to remember those who gave their lives for us.

Christmas Day 1914, soldiers stopped fighting and sang carols together, and even gave each other presents.

Below is a link to CBeebies film on Remembrance. It really is a lovely way to introduce children to this special day.

Firework Anxiety

Bonfire night can be an exciting time of year but for many children and adults it can an anxious time. It's a really common fear - it's dark outside, mixed with the loud bangs.
The sudden loud noises can activate the startle response - our brain identifies it as a threat. This can then become a trigger for anxiety in the future.

What can you do to help them?

πŸ’™ Remain calm - children pick up on our emotions and will model your behaviour.
πŸ’™ Don't make them face their fears - forcing a child to confront a fear will not help them.
πŸ’™ Talk through their fear.
πŸ’™ Explain how fireworks work - this helps them by giving them a logical reason for why they make nose.
πŸ’™ Make it a game - guess what colour you will see next, change the loud bangs for fun noises for example, gold fireworks sound like lions.
πŸ’™ Breathing exercises - these will help to calm the mind and body.
πŸ’™ Noise cancelling headphones for the noise, Sunglasses for the brightness.
πŸ’™ Watch them from home - this will help reduce the noise and they will feel safe.
πŸ’™ Children can grow out of this fear, however you cannot rush this.

Hubble Bubble

Lets talk about messy play!

Grab a big bowl and make make your own potion! You could make this outside with mud and bits from the garden or on a rainy day make an edible one from the kitchen. Have fun and see what you can concoct.

Pumpkin Breathing

Lets take 5 minutes to practise our breathing and relax.

* Grab a small pumpkin or gourd and lie on a picnic blanket or on the grass. Make sure you are comfortable.

* Place your pumpkin gently onto your belly and hold your hands gently on top of them.

* As we count to three inhale a breath through your nose to fill up your belly and watch you pumpkin rise gently.

* As we slowly count to four we exhale slowly shrinking our bellies and our pumpkin will fall slowly.

* Repeat this at least 5 times.

How do we feel?

Could you see your pumpkin moving?

Do ghosts journal? ABSOLUTELY!

Journals are a great tool. Writing down your thoughts and feelings allow you to empty your head and also to see things more clearly.

Try these:

✏️ write down 3 things you are looking forward to every week.
✏️ write down one thing you'd like to achieve each week.
✏️ track your mood.
✏️ have a space for notes and doodles.
✏️ have a section for self-care activities you can check off.
✏️ you might want to track: daylight, social interaction, sleep, water and relaxation time.
✏️ get some stickers to decorate and make it personal to you.

Clock changes and your mental health

Last night the clocks went back at hour and for many people it can have an impact on their mental health. The days are shorter and darker, and the change can disrupt sleep patterns which can effect mood, cognitive function and energy levels.

Here are some tips to help with the change:

🍁 spend time outdoors in the daylight

🍁 create a cosy space indoors - blankets, warm lighting, anything that brings comfort

🍁 See friends and family if you can

🍁 maintain your normal routine to help your body adjust

🍁 give yourself time to adjust to the change

Clock changes can effect people in different ways. It can disrupt the internal body clock which creates mood changes.

If you are struggling with SAD (seasonal affective disorder), depression or isolation please reach out to you family, GP or mental health charities.
