Obviously, I am no expert in this field. I just really love running, but I don’t claim to be a pro, or have all the answers. BUT when I posted a story asking if you wanted to the lessons I learned between my first and second marathons it got like my biggest reaction ever. So here ya go.

1. This time around, I tried to do two strength based sessions a week to support the running plan. Predominantly lower body but also some core stuff as well to help posture etc when running. Also did yoga daily to keep mobility consistent.

2. I literally added about 700 calories per day to my diet. Training for Paris I had it in my head I had to stay lean to be quick. This time I focused on food as fuel. I did put on weight, which was hard mentally, but it paid off, and I found I was able to run with more ease and recovered quicker.

3. I didn’t worry too much about getting really fast. Out of four runs a week I normally did a tempo, an interval, an easy and a long. And when I ran easy, it was really easy.

4. There’s never any tissue in the portaloo. Remember to bring your own.

5. A neat trick - bring a bin bag to wear over your running top keep you warm until you start running. You can ditch it at the start line instead of loosing a jacket.

6. The portaloos also have no water or soap. Don’t forget the hand san. Especially as you’ll be eating on the go with your hands!

7. The portaloo queues were mental when I was running. I ran into a supermarket and they let me use the toilet and I was in and out in two minutes. No standing about. No getting cold.

8. I wore my headphones from the start, and they died about 40 minutes from the end of my run. I wish I’d saved them until the last push when I needed the boost.

9. I took some paracetamol when my legs got achey and also ate about 4 bananas that day. Easy to eat and digest, fast acting. Doesn’t make you want to run for a loo.

10. I didn’t bring spare shoes, and my trainers were soaking. I ended up walking around in socks after the race.

11. I didn’t stretch after! I sat straight down, drank a pint and then was surprised when I couldn’t walk after. It was a rookie mistake. A mistake I’ve now made twice.

✨ Spotlight time!

This lovely lady is one of these women who seems to be able to do it all! Tanya has a young family, runs her own business, holds down a job, just rescued a dog and managed to swim enough miles that she hit her fundraising target for MacMillan cancer charity this year.

And get, it’s not always been so easy. She just makes it look that way. I’m really proud of Tanya, when I first met her she was admittedly quite burnt out and never found time for herself. She has had to be brave this year, prioritising her own needs and future dreams. In doing so has found a new sense of fulfilment in her life. Her business is thriving, as is her relationship with her family.

She also gets absolute top marks from me because she brings her beautiful youngest son Gabriel along to yoga most weeks. What a brilliant way to demonstrate a healthy lifestyle to your kids.

And if you aren’t in the know - her cakes are to DIE FOR. for more info. Thank you Tanya for your commitment, cakes and the joy you bring to class!

• How long have you been practicing yoga?
1 year

• What motivated you to start practicing?
I was looking to find time for myself, slow down the crazy routine and relieve my back.

• What has yoga done for you as a person?
Yoga has helped me to stop and think more about me, more about my priorities, what makes me happy, what helps me to enjoy everyday and all the simple things in life like going for a walk, a simple cup of coffee in silence with my self. Helped me to focus on what really matters.

• What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone who is just starting their yoga journey?
I would say to enjoy every minute of the class, challenge yourself.

• What are some of your favorite yoga poses, and why do you enjoy them?
Half moon is definitely my favourite but I enjoy the twists we do with our back, throughly relieving.
