getactiveabc is the umbrella brand for the Health and Recreation department in Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council and offers a unique mix of health and fitness activities, memberships, water sports, snow sports, dry land activities, golf and swimming. Our outdoor facilities comprise Craigavon Golf & Ski Centre, Kinnego Marina, Kinnego Bushcraft Centre, Loughgall Golf & Country Park, South Lake Watersports, Gosford Forest Park, Clare Glen Caravan Park, Ardmore Recreation Centre, Cathedral Road Recreation Centre as well as a host of parks and open spaces including Lurgan Park, Palace Demesne, Solitude Park, Banbridge, Dromore Park, Portadown Peoples Park and Craigavon City Park incorporating Tannaghmore Gardens and Animal Farm. Our Sports Development team carry out a varied programme of activities throughout the year to get everyone active, moving and outdoors across Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon. The team also provides an important link to governing bodies of sport and Sport NI and is the ‘go to’ for all sports persons from grass roots to elite athletes in the local area. The team is responsible for delivering the Sports Forum, funding for clubs, education courses, schools programmes, sport and exercise programmes for the public and the annual Sports Awards ceremony. We were delighted to witness the incredible talent across the borough at this year’s South Lake Meet 🏊‍♂️🌟—a fantastic showcase of how our local swimming community continues to grow and develop.

Hosted by Portadown Amateur Swimming Club and Lurgan Swimming Club, the event made waves not only in the pool but across the wider community 🌊

It was a vibrant, successful gala celebrating sport, wellbeing, and community spirit. Swimmers of all ages and abilities took part, backed by an amazing turnout of families, supporters, and local representatives 👏

It was also a pleasure to welcome the Lord Mayor Stephen Moutray and Councillor Peter Haire, whose support highlights the importance of grassroots sport in building strong, connected communities 🤝

In the pool, the talent on display was outstanding—from first-time competitors taking the plunge to experienced swimmers chasing regional and national qualifying times 🥇 Personal bests were smashed, goals achieved, and plenty of proud moments shared all around 💙

Both groups play a vital role in supporting their members to be active and stay connected through a range of physical and social activities.

We are delighted to introduce Ryan, your new Walking for All Officer for the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon borough!

Walking for All helps people of all ages and abilities to enjoy short, regular walks in local community spaces, helping residents get active, enjoy the outdoors and connect with others 🫶🌳🌤

To support this, Ryan is actively seeking residents and community groups interested in leading walks on a regular basis. Becoming a walk leader is a great way to support your community to become more active. Full training and ongoing support are provided, and you do not need to be super fit or an expert walker, just friendly, reliable and enthusiastic.

The good weather has arrived right on cue for the Couch to 5K programme, which kicks off this evening at South Lake Leisure Centre and Lurgan Park and tomorrow evening at The Mall in Armagh 🏁🌤️

We wish everyone who has signed up, the best of luck for the 9 weeks ahead 🍀

Here are some top tips from others who completed the programme:

🐌 Start slow: even it's it really slow, just go at a comfortable pace that suits you.

💪 Be consistent: aim for 3 runs per week and the rest days will allow your body to recover and avoid injury.

🚶🏼 Embrace the walks: yes, interval walking is part of the programme so don't be afraid to walk when advised to!

🙌 Stick with it: it won't be easy but it will be worth it! Remember, our coaches are here to motivate and support you so you're not alone.
