Today is Global Developmental Delay Day. Global developmental delay is a term often used when a young child is significantly delayed in two or more areas of development - and that can include communication.

At Sensibus, we see every day that communication is more than words. Some children need extra time and support with understanding language, expressing themselves, or developing speech sounds - and they may communicate through gestures, sounds, pictures, signs, or AAC.

A few gentle supports can make a real difference:
✨ follow your child’s lead and comment on what they’re doing
✨ use visuals to support understanding and routine (model with no pressure)
✨ consider signs/symbols alongside speech to add helpful visual cues

And if you’re feeling worried or unsure - it isn’t anyone’s fault, and you don’t have to carry it alone.

Following the news about our new name, we want to go into detail about each part of our service. First, we have shared what an autism assessment is, now we are focusing on what actually happens in an autism assessment.

An autism assessment at Sensibus involves:

• Listening to parents and carers
• Spending time with your child
• School observation or education discussion
• Bringing everything together (with our multidisciplinary team)

We’ll explain everything clearly, without jargon, and make sure you have time to ask questions.

Good luck to our non-clinical director Tony who is taking on his 4th London Marathon tomorrow. He is running for Sense, a charity that believes that no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, should be isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential.

You can check out his fundraising efforts here:

Everyone at Sensibus would like to wish him the best of luck! 🏃🍀

✨ Turning questions into comments ✨
When adults talk about what a child is doing, rather than asking lots of questions, it can make interaction feel calmer, easier, and more inviting.
Comments reduce pressure, give children clear language to hear and copy, and support communication at their own pace. You’re still being interactive — just in a more supportive way.
Small shift. Big impact 💛

Autism assessment isn’t about changing who a child is.

It’s about understanding who they are. ♾️

At Sensibus, we see assessment as a process of listening, observing, and making sense of a child’s experiences - alongside their family.

We’ve shared more about this in our latest blog: What is an autism assessment? https://sensibus.co.uk/aa/what-is-an-autism-assessment/

If you’re at the early thinking stage and have questions, we’re open for gentle enquiries and conversations - no pressure, no rush.

The Beauty of Autistic Joy Webinar ✨

Join us on Friday 24th April from 9.30am-11am via Zoom for our brand new webinar all about autistic joy!

Join Lynda Richardson (Head of Operations) and Fiona Richards (Autism Hub Manager) for a warm and uplifting session exploring autistic joy, strengths, and deep interests.

For parents/carers of autistic children and young people, the autism diagnosis will usually have come as a direct result of looking at “deficits” that meet a specific criterion to receive this diagnosis. From the outside looking in, being autistic has often been viewed negatively in our society.

But what about the positive aspects of being autistic… and there are many if we just know how to recognise them. This webinar aims to take us all on a journey of positivity where we embrace the joys of being autistic, through lived experience of actually autistic children, young people and adults, as well as parents/ carers and those who work closely within the field of autism every day.

Book your place on our website: https://www.ttht.co.uk/event/beauty-of-autistic-joy/ or by calling us on 0300 365 3055 or email us at: admin@ttht.co.uk.

Our therapy team wanted share some of their favourite things to play with in sessions. Choosing the right toys is important for ensuring sessions are fun and engaging for each child!

🐵 Rebecca chose the game Monkey Business because:

• It's a great turn taking game when working on speech sounds.

• It can be competitive at times which makes learning sounds more fun.

• The monkeys can be cheeky sometimes and like to hide around the room.

🚗Beth chose one of our Melissa and Doug Sound Puzzles because:

• It makes lots of fun noises even if they do make me jump sometimes

• I like the challenge of finding the right piece and fitting it into the slot

• I like the immediate feedback of the noises when the puzzle piece fits

🪄Julie chose pop tubes because:

• Pop tubes are always a hit!

• They’re great for building turn‑taking and anticipation, and the pulling and stretching gives lovely proprioceptive input.

• I often use them as a fun alternative to throwing toys.

🎈And finally Toni chose the balloon cars and pump because:

• I love all the different options that you can add to the pump (cars, dinosaurs, a crab, a spaceman and a rocket!)🚀

• I like the way that the spaceman and rocket can fly from the balloon pump

• Pushing the balloon pump can be a great way to share interactions within a session
