Holly has been busy playing in our therapy space and we wanted to share some ideas of what we could comment about what she is doing!

Modelling language is providing examples of language your child might use in the future, we do this by commenting. As your child goes through their day you can make comments about what they (or their toys) are doing.

For example:
- Holly is bouncing, bouncing on the trampoline, I love bouncing,

- Down the slide, Holly is sliding

- Riding the horse, on the horse, Holly is riding

- Holly is sleeping, sleepy time, I’m so tired

✨ Christmas & Change of Routine ✨

For many autistic children, the festive season can feel exciting and challenging. Changes in routine, new environments, and sensory overload can make this
time stressful.

Here’s the key thing: whatever your Christmas looks like is absolutely okay.

If you keep things low-key, that’s fine.
If you skip certain traditions, that’s fine.
If you create your own unique way to celebrate, that’s more than fine—it’s wonderful.

Every family is different, and every child’s needs matter. The most important gift you can give is a sense of safety and comfort. 💜

What does your Christmas look like? Share your ideas below!

Christmas Jumper Day is one of Save the Children's biggest annual fundraising events. Every December they ask schools, workplaces, and community and friend groups to put on a Christmas jumper and donate whatever they can afford. By taking part this year you can help support kids and families stay safe, healthy and learning - and change their future for good.

We often say that modelling language supports language development, but what does this actually mean?

Holly the helpful elf has created a summary around this topic. Modelling language is providing examples of language your child might use in the future, we do this by commenting.

We often find ourselves asking children lots of questions, which can be great! But these examples of language do not help children express themselves or communicate their needs. For this reason we recommend using the rule of thumb, this helps us use more comments than questions.

The rule of thumb is to provide at least 4 comments, for every one question you ask. ✋🏼

So how can you model language?

As your child goes through their day you can make comments about:

• what they do,

• things they are interested in,

• what they can see,

• what is happening around them.

We have provided some example on the slides based on photos of Holly ❄️

Such as when Holly is opening/looking in a gift bag we could comment;
"open the bag", "let's look inside", "that's a shiny coin" (as she pulls a coin out the bag), "put in the bag".

Or when Holly is looking at book we could comment;
"Let's read", "turn the page", "This is interesting", "Wow, a present" (naming what is on the page rather than asking what they can see).

Elf on a CELF! Holly has been very helpful today, tidying up our assessment resources.

A CELF is an assessment resource that we use to identify weaknesses and strengths of a child's language abilities. This assess a child's phonological awareness, comprehension and receptive and expressive language.

Holly the Helpful Elf has delivered some fun Christmas games for us to use in therapy sessions.

Orchard Toys are some of our favourites and we can't wait to play these with the little ones we support.

We love making therapy fun and engaging for the children we work with and it's always been exciting to have a Christmas themed game! 🎄

👂Happy Listening Day! 👂

Listening is the ability to interpret different sounds.

Listening helps children develop speech sound skills. So it is important for you to listen to your child and provide clear examples when you hear your child mispronounce a sound.

For example, if your child said “look, a tat” you could repeat back to them “yes, a cat. I see the cat” 🐈

Here, we share activities such as listening walks, and using instruments to encourage listening together.

Happy World Hello Day! 👋

Today we wanted to highlight the various forms of communication children might use to express themselves.

Communication may include:
• gestures,
• signs (BSL, Makaton),
• facial expressions,
• pictures
• vocalisations (e.g. screaming, cheering),
• AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication)

Our Toy of the Week this week is the Jumini Wobbly Stacker. We had lots of fun with our little ones last week with this toy.

Children loved stacking the rings, lining them up or watching it wobble

It provided lots of opportunity to follow a child’s lead and model language such as:

“this is fun”, “here’s another one”, “on it goes”, “wow, it’s so wobbly”, “on”, “again”

We have some available to purchase from The Hive shop 🐝

This week has been World Nursery Rhyme Week.

World Nursery Rhyme Week promotes the importance of nursery rhymes in early childhood development and education. We are taking this time to share how we can encourage communication through songs and rhymes.

- Nursery rhymes and songs are a great way to help children develop their language skills.

- Nursery rhymes use rhyming words, rhythm and repetitive phrases which are often easily remembered by children.

- They are a great way to introduce new vocabulary and help children learn about the word around them.

- Some children communicate through using favourite songs and rhymes and its helpful for adults to acknowledge this and join in.

At The Hive we love to use songs and rhymes in sessions. 🐝🎶
