Maia Fenn is undertaking a Radiographer Apprenticeship, let's hear her thoughts!

How is your apprenticeship going?
"I’m enjoying it so far and looking forward to going into the second year. I’ve loved getting back into the educational side of things and being able to use all my pretty pens and highlighters again!!"

How has it supported your development or career?
"Without this opportunity, I would not have been able to develop my role as a Radiographer. I have loved being an Radiographer Assistant, but it was time for me to move on in my career."

What have you enjoyed or found valuable?
"The apprenticeship has allowed me to get more hands-on experience as I am a more practical worker. One thing I loved as an Radiographer Assistant was talking to multiple people and I am so happy that this role has not diminished that, if anything it has amplified it. I have also had unbelievable support from both my colleagues and manager which is a major benefit!"

Any advice you’d give to others considering an apprenticeship?
"Go for it, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain!"

Why do bladder problems often seem worse in cold weather? Why can going from a cosy, warm room out into the cold result in an urge to urinate? Why can incontinence issues seem worse after a night out or a few glasses of wine? And do men suffer more than women?

We're proud to uphold an infection-free reputation, with no cases of MRSA as far as our records go back. But how do we prevent infection day-to-day at our hospital?

🧼We follow national guidance on both pre-admission screening and pre operative washing
🧼We've invested in high-tech theatres, complete with laminar flow technology
🧼We provide extensive training for our own Housekeeping team
🧼 We have an Infection Prevention Control Nurse to ensure that our strategy to enable a clean, infection-free environment is always adhered to

“First for Thirst”: Supporting patients from the moment they arrive.

Pre-operative anxiety is common and something as simple as a dry mouth can make it worse. That’s why we’ve introduced our “Happy Hour” welcome drink initiative, offering hydration as soon as patients step onto the ward.

This small gesture makes a big difference:

✨ Reducing anxiety
✨ Easing discomfort
✨ Supporting smoother, more efficient cannulation in theatre
✨ Setting a caring tone for the patient journey

From the first sip to the final step of recovery, we’re committed to making every patient feel valued.

For Deidre Mawer, Trainee Nursing Associate, comments on her apprenticeship so far:

“I am nearing the end of my foundation year, and it has been both an interesting and challenging journey. Thankfully, I have had a supportive cohort and excellent support during my community placements.

I am also grateful that I was able to complete the course alongside my hospital role, with overall support from the hospital and my mentors, Jane and Indira.

I have found reflective practice very valuable, as it has helped me think differently and become more self-aware, while learning to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.

My journey has been a long one. I first completed the Care Certificate, then had to redo my GCSE maths and finally move into a full-time clinical role to meet the programme requirements.

Having achieved all of this, I truly believe in the saying, ‘Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re probably right’ (Ford, 1922).

If you are considering the apprenticeship, I would encourage you to go for it. It can change you in a positive way, but it does require a firm commitment.”

Business Change Analyst, Stuart Copper has recently embarked on a Level 7 AI Data Specialist course, let's hear what he has to say about the opportunity this :

“This course comes with a lot of focus on maths, statistics and programming. It’s going to be a steep learning curve but I’m very grateful to Nick Lord and Vicki Smith for supporting me to undertake it - and I’m already looking forward to paying them back by putting my learning into practice to benefit the hospital with its journey into AI and by gaining insights from the mass of data we have access to.”
