This is what one of my patients said to me yesterday after returning from the Canary Islands ๐Ÿ. A week of sun had given her a big hit of vitamin D.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธVitamin D helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. These nutrients are needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿฆด

The body creates vitamin D from direct sunlight on the skin when outdoors. During winter it is hard for our bodies to make enough vitamin D from sunlight, especially when we get to the stage of going to work in the dark, and coming home in the dark ๐Ÿฆ‰๐ŸŒƒ

What you can do:

โœ… Make sure your diet includes some of the following:
โžก๏ธ oily fish โ€“ such as salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel
โžก๏ธ red meat and liver
โžก๏ธ egg yolks

โœ… Consider taking a vitamin D supplement during the winter. This is now advised through the NHS website.

โœ… Catch every last ray of sun you can โ˜€ whilst we won't be sunbathing for a while ๐Ÿ– direct sunshine on your skin is the best way to get topped up with vitamin D, and there's some great colours this autumn ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ

โœ… A lot of patients report good improvements from using a SAD lamp alarm clock to help wake them up in the mornings โฐ ๐Ÿ”†

Gardening does not have to cause pain!

๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ Gardening can be a workout so ensure you stretch before and after (remember the stretches your osteopath advised, if not, get in touch ๐Ÿ˜‰).

๐ŸชดPay attention to the way you are bending and lifting.
- Keep the objects close to your body
- Bend your knees and squat or kneel to get to the ground instead of bending forwards.

๐ŸงฐUse tools and accessories to help.
- Use a wheelbarrow or cart to carry heavy objects.
- Use knee pads to protect your knees while kneeling.
- Use a garden stool or bench when weeding or planting.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŒพMost importantly donโ€™t tackle too much at once!
Pace yourself, listen to your body, take breaks and stay hydrated.

How to best prevent running injuries ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ

With running season in full swing, here are some tips to help prevent the build-up of niggles and injuries.

๐Ÿ“ŒPLAN YOUR TRAINING - Running injuries tend to occur from doing too much too soon. Plan your training so that you can gradually increase your mileage.

๐Ÿ“ŒDo not change too many variables at once - For example, if you are looking at improving your 5km or 10km time, you could mainly focus on improving the intensity of your workouts, rather than increasing the frequency of your runs.

๐Ÿ“Œ Resistance/strength training - Making sure to make time for getting your tendons/ligaments/joints stronger with exercises such as squats/lunges will help to reduce your chances of overuse injuries. You do not need to necessarily have a gym membership.

Lastly, rest is just as important as any of the above advice. Getting adequate sleep, downtime from work, and stress management help to reduce your risk of injury.

We've seen a lot of patients with neck pain recently in clinic, a lot of them stuck in a bent over position.

We are increasingly reliant on our smartphones / tablets for our day-to-day life and work. Gone are the days when you see a whole train carriage of commuters typing on laptops balanced precariously on those titchy tables. Most are typing on their phones instead.

This picture shows how much mechanical pull we put on our necks the further we bend forwards. An average head weighs around 5kg, but look how much it increases as we lean forwards! โš–๏ธ
There is a lot of argument in the research that challenges exactly how much the load on the neck increases as we move forwards, but whether it's up to 27kg or not, it's still more load on your neck ๐Ÿ™†โ€โ™‚๏ธ

Be mindful of the position you use your smartphone in and try and take frequent breaks ๐Ÿ‘ Downtime away from the screen always helps ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ

Good morning everyone!

A couple of months have gone by since the gyms reopened and we've seen a range of old and new injuries presenting in clinic๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ

The key to rehab, just like weight loss goals and lifestyle changes, is consistency! ๐Ÿข
Yes prevention is better than cure - if you keep mobile inbetween workouts, do some stretching, don't skip your warm ups, and keep a good balance - then you're far less likely to get injured.

When things do go wrong and your body is injured, whether it was your fault or not, consistency in your rehab exercises and stretching is very important ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™‚๏ธ

Every patient is a rehab patient ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™‚๏ธ

If you don't take steps to try and avoid a similar injury happening in the future, it's far more likely to reoccur ๐Ÿ˜”

Iโ€™m recruiting for another associate to come and join me and Jonathan Gaffney at the K2 Leisure Centre in Crawley. I have worked here for 8 years, and set up my own business in August 2016.

This is a busy general clinic, which also attracts a large number of sports people from a range of sports, so a good structural approach to treatment is important. An interest in other osteopathic approaches and a sports massage qualification would be useful.

This position would particularly suit a recent or new graduate. David is also a Clinic Tutor at the University College of Osteopathy on Mondays and will provide plenty of mentoring and support for the new associate!

There are a range of times and days available, initially looking at covering 2 or 3 days-a-week.
