National Bird Day is observed annually on January 5th. It was established in 2002 by the Avian Welfare Coalition to raise awareness of the welfare of both wild and captive birds. The date was selected as it falls midway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, representing a balance between daylight and darkness.
Birds play an important role in ecosystems through pest control, pollination, and seed dispersal. They have also influenced human culture, art, and history for thousands of years, highlighting their long-standing significance to both the natural world and society π
