There is a tendancy to hunker down in winter, it is understandable; cold, dark, wet, short days, the warmth of an open fire are going to keep us indoors until spring pokes its head above the slowly lightening skies. The problem with this ( and I am speaking from personal experience) is that, as soon as the ground is dry enough to start digging, we get out and do just that - for hours on end. Not a bad thing in itself but if you have been hibernating for the last three months you will have stiffened up, your muscles will have become weaker ( as we age it becomes very difficult to get this strength back once it has gone, alarmingly, we loose around 1% of muscle mass per year after the age of 35. I reckon that, as I am the same weight as I was in my thirties I must have replaced muscle with cake! ).
By extension, if one is weaker, the tasks become harder and one places oneself in a position of compromise; muscles tire faster, joint control decreases and the potential for injury rises. You end up hurting yourself and need help ( for help see: need an osteopath).
Keeping active during this time of year is incredibly important. Weight bearing activities are most significant; gym work, pilates, circuit training, walking- anything you can manage on a regular basis that involves working the legs (swimming is not one of those activities, there is nothing wrong with swimming but in itself will not keep your back as strong as other, weight bearing, exercise). Start easy and work up, develop your own programme of exercise or find someone who can help. What ever it is you do make it progressive, pushing a five kilo weight on day one is great, if you are still using the same weight, or doing the same number of repititions after six weeks then you are likely not improving as much as you could.
I hope this helps, if it does I'll likely not be seeing you in the spring. If you need advice this is our number: 07903 439235. If you need to visit the practice you could call on the number above or visit the website and book online
