The aim of this sanctuary is to bring together a number of teachers/instructors to use their talents and expertise in classes encompassing all quiet varieties – Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, Meditation, and much more. In turn bringing awareness to the community – a taste of different styles, levels, teachers, at different times of the day, so that there will ultimately be “something suitable for everybody”.

Honoring the season of Winter

It’s the time of year where all nature listens. It allows itself to be guided by the length of the day, the changes in temperature - the shift from doing, to none doing. If you look closely, some of the trees have released their leaves as they are no longer needed. The animals and insects are slowing down, many have taken themselves away already, they are slowing down for the winter to come.

Winter is most definitely on its way. Through a TCM lens Yin is now dominating Yang, ever flowing and ever merging. One cannot survive without the other. The foundational theory of TCM is the balance of yin and yang within ourselves. Don’t be misled into thinking slowing down is just about the balance of movement and stillness. It’s so very much more. Your body mirrors nature. It breathes, vibrates and flows like the world surrounding you. You are not apart from nature; you are a reflection of it. Slowing down isn’t just a luxury it’s a survival mechanism.

We’ve created societies that do not value rest, genuine nourishment. Many people are running on fumes, immune systems broken, nervous systems frazzled. Slowing down does not mean being lazy, it’s quite the opposite. It’s actively prioritising time to refuel your battery. The sun has less time in the sky, temperatures are lower, we are not designed to be as active as we are in the summer. We have to flow with the seasons, allow the changes to come without resisting. If we resist, the body will tell you when enough is enough…….is it worth it?

We do not hibernate, but our sleep should give us that deep state of rest, that helps us traverse the winter and come into spring healthy and full of vitality. Genuine restful sleep takes practise. During your day, YOU have to make time to soothe your nervous system, you can’t be full power from the moment you wake to the moment your head hits the pillow. Throughout the day, 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there to pause, to give your body the respect it deserves. Only YOU can do this. Slow down, the energy of winter is inviting you to do this.

💤Restorative Postures - props or no props?💤

What's your favourite restorative yoga posture?

Yoga can be practised with or without props, but when it comes to Yin Yoga or Restorative postures, sometimes we use ALL the props (just ask Dee as she so effortlessly demonstrates supported heart opener😆).

However, maybe we don't have the time to set up, or even have the props, but I bet you can find a wall. Jules our resident expert in Yin Yoga using the wall, shows us her favourite posture - Legs up the Wall, also known as 'Viparita Karani'.

Benefits of Supported Heart Opener - Lengthens shorted muscles in the front of the chest due to bad posture. Helps the muscles on the upper back come back into their neutral length, as they are being stretched and unable to activate and hold our correct posture. Energetically working at the level of Anahata Chakra, the space we experience joy and happiness. Physically rounding the shoulders and closing off the heart space energetically leads us to feeling lost, vulnerable and uncertain. When we open this space, we cultivate the practise of patience, acceptance and compassion - ultimately for ourselves.

Benefits of Vipariti Karani - Helps circulation of fluids in the body, water, blood lymph (especially for those who are sedentary or have poor circulation in the lower limbs), helping improve your immune system. It helps take you into the parasympathetic nervous system, the place of rest. The breathing slows down and the vagus nerve responds by helping you to fully relax. Venus return, blood flow back to the heart is easier so the heart rate can slow down, blood pressure drops, helping you move deeper into rest. This posture helps relieve the aches and pains of being on your feet all day. Especially at this time of year, we seem to be out and about, rushing getting things done, or out celebrating - give your body a rest, kick those shoes off, and get those legs up the wall.

🎉Breathe - Move - Celebrate - Hibernate 💫

Have you ever been on a retreat with me (Shelley)? Well these 3 hours will be a glimpse of the practices we do at The Bhakti Yoga Center.

We will begin with a consecration, acknowledging the year that has passed. Like the trees that have dropped their leaves, I will invite you to acknowledge what no longer serves you, with an opportunity to release the energetic binds associated with it.

Many of you practice Pranayama (Breathwork) with me in our classes, this will be an opportunity to delve deeper into the layers of your being, and feel energy swirl through you, nourishing every cell......the beginnings of letting go of what no longer serves you.

We will move in classical styles as well as free flowing rhythms, all designed to free the tension that is hindering your innate state of feeling alive!

Liberation / Freedom - Conscious Celebration! We will use the practice of Kirtan to build the energy, to rejoice and celebrate the Divine which resides in all of us. Using traditional mantra to aid the healing and letting go, our vibrations will clear the obstacles that block our paths.

Once we have broken the bonds that no longer serve us, we can invite it our hearts true desire, a wish from the heart. Using immersive 9D technology, you will be guided into your very own hibernation. A time to assimilate the practices, a time to truly feel what your body needs.

We will close by welcoming in the light after the longest night. You will set your intention for the future, an opportunity to develop your sankalpa, a wish made from the heart.
