Leighton Hospital Maternity Unit

Leighton Hospital Maternity Unit We aim to provide up to date, evidence based information to pregnant people and their families.

At Leighton Hospital we provide the highest standard of care to mothers, babies and their families. We strive to achieve excellence in our care by working in partnership with others in the multi professional team. We have a dedicated team of Midwives, Obstetricians, Maternity Support Workers, and other Health Care Professionals to support women in their pregnancy journey. We endeavour to create an atmosphere where there is mutual respect, effective communication, sharing of information, and an agreed, individualised, plan of care for mothers and babies. We maintain high standards by the application of policies which support evidence based practice. Reflection on practice, audits and risk reporting are tools we use to monitor this. We aim to create an inter-professional learning environment, enabling staff and students to develop their full potential, by achievement of their own developmental needs.

The recommended room temperature for where your baby sleeps is 16 – 20Β°C. A baby sleep bag or a lightweight sheet/blanket should be all you need for your baby to sleep in.

Research shows that babies are safer being cooler than being too hot, as overheating increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Don’t be tempted to overwrap your baby. But if your room temperature is slightly colder than 16 – 20Β°C, consider:

If you use lightweight sheets and/or blankets, add an extra lightweight blanket or layer of clothing to your baby.

If you are using a baby sleeping bag, add an extra layer of clothing. Or, choose a sleeping bag with a higher tog.

WARNING: Baby sleep pillows can be deadly

These soft pillows and cushions are often marketed for baby sleep or as somewhere for a baby to be left unsupervised. But this can cause suffocation or overheating, and your baby might even die.

Despite what some online product listings suggest, pillows are not recommended for babies until they are at least 12 months old. The safest place for your baby to sleep is on a clear, firm, flat surface.
