Ear Pinning & Aftercare — what you need to know - massage therapist POV
Ear pinning (otoplasty) is a common surgical procedure designed to bring the ears closer to the head, helping many people feel more confident about their appearance.
But once the area heals, it’s important to remember what happens beneath the surface.
Scar tissue forms as part of the healing process — and while completely normal, it’s less pliable than regular tissue. This can reduce mobility, restrict nerve conduction, and slow down the natural flow of lymphatic fluid.
Just behind the ear sit several lymph nodes, along with major lymphatic and blood vessels. The ear canal, jaw joint, and upper neck are also closely connected through layers of soft tissue. So when scar tissue tightens in one area, it can subtly affect others — sometimes showing up as jaw pain, headaches, tightness, or general discomfort. This is especially common in clients who already suffer with TMJ disfunction, neck pain or migraines.
Once your surgeon/consultant has confirmed full healing, gentle massage can help. Working around the neck, throat, scalp, ears, and jaw can release tension, encourage lymph flow, and restore comfort and mobility.
If you’re experiencing pain, stiffness, or headaches after ear pinning or any facial surgery, get in touch — we can help you recover, rebalance, and feel more like yourself again.
