What if touch affected more than just your muscles, and could be used for nervous system regulation as well.

Emerging research is expanding how we understand manual therapy. Instead of only affecting muscles and joints, soft-tissue work can influence the sensory and emotional systems, shaping how the nervous system processes pain and stress.

We now know pain isn’t just local tissue damage. It’s a complex conversation between body and brain.
This is why Bowen’s gentle, precise moves matter. Rather than forcing change, Bowen works with the nervous system, giving the body space to respond, reset and reorganise.

Clients often describe:
✨ Deep relaxation
✨ Reduced tension
✨ Greater ease of movement

If you’re curious about how Bowen supports nervous system regulation, I’m happy to chat.

Knee pain isn’t always about the knee.

One of the most common things I see in clinic is knee pain that’s actually referred from the hips, or lower back. The body works as one connected system, and when movement or tension is restricted in one area, another area often takes the strain.

The knees are especially vulnerable. If the hips aren’t moving well or the muscles around them are tight, the knees are often forced to compensate, which is when pain shows up.

This is why treating symptoms alone is often not the long term answer.

Bowen addresses the whole body, helping uncover the root cause of pain, which isn’t always where you’re expecting to find it.

Over the weekend the Guardian reported that a growing number of UK employers are introducing beehives at workplaces - on rooftops, in courtyards, and in parking areas - as a creative way to support employee wellbeing and build a sense of community. Companies across the UK are partnering with professional beekeepers to install and manage the hives, offer workshops, and even livestream hive activity into offices. The experience aims to helps staff de-stress, connect with nature, and take a meaningful break from screen time. Some organisations view it as a more purposeful wellbeing initiative than typical perks like free snacks or gym discounts.

What would you prefer – a discount for the gym or a beehive outside the office?

Feeling stiff from sitting or scrolling?

The latest wellness trend isn’t another intense workout - it’s ‘movement snacks’ - short bursts of movement throughout the day that help keep your body mobile and pain-free. It is thought they can be effective at reducing injury risk and improving posture.

But what if you want deeper support? That’s where Bowen therapy comes in.

- It encourages your body to reset tension pattern
- Helps reduce muscular tightness and pain
- Complements daily ‘movement snacks’ by enhancing mobility

Try pairing simple movement snacks AND Bowen sessions to help relieve neck, back or shoulder tension - especially if you’re working at a desk all day.

Is ‘Tech Neck’ ruining your posture and comfort?

From phones to laptops, ‘tech neck’ (forward head posture) is one of the most common pain complaints online - and people are trying a variety of things, including “adult tummy time” (!) to ease it.

What most people aren’t talking about is how tension in the neck, upper back and shoulders can be influenced by deeper muscular and nervous system patterns - and that’s where Bowen therapy can help:

- Gently signals your nervous system to relax tight muscles
- Helps restore better alignment & reduce chronic tension
- Can complement posture exercises like mindful movement or stretches

All without deep pressure - perfect for sensitive areas like the neck or upper back.

Did you know that more than half of UK adults feel that wellness trends they have tried didn’t help them?

This is because trends often lack consistency or real support. If you tried something new this month in a bid to start the year strong, but found it wasn’t sustainable, it didn’t work, or you hated doing it, then it might be time to try a gentle, personalised and evidence-based practice like Bowen therapy.

I see a huge variety of people in my clinics looking for support with everything from mobility, tension release or insomnia. If you are looking for a new approach to an old issue then do get in touch as Bowen might be the solution you have been looking for

Burnout isn’t just “being tired. Recent reports have highlighted a rise in burnout symptoms, including chronic tiredness, poor sleep, tension, headaches, irritability and feeling unable to switch off.
Burnout often builds quietly, usually during busy or stressful periods, but early support can make a huge difference.

Bowen is a gentle, hands-on therapy that encourages deep relaxation and supports the nervous system. Many people experiencing burn out symptoms find it helps them to:
• slow down and properly rest
• release built-up tension
• feel calmer and more balanced
• sleep and recover better

If your body feels exhausted, and you feel overloaded and overwhelmed, it may be a sign to pause and reset. This isn’t something to try and push through.

One of my favourite tools alongside Bowen Therapy is my infra-red light, so much so that it often comes with me to sports fixtures! When my daughter finishes a match, I can treat her immediately if necessary, while the area in question is most receptive to recovery.

Infra-red light works by gently penetrating beneath the surface of the skin, reaching muscles, joints and soft tissue, stimulating cellular activity, and supporting tissue repair.

It’s a fabulous tool for active people (and busy families!) – it’s gentle, effective, and works with the body like Bowen. A simple, supportive intervention that can make a big difference.

If you’d like to know more about infra-red therapy and how it could support your recovery, or overall wellbeing, do get in touch, I’m always happy to explain more.

Did you know your diaphragm plays a huge role in how your body handles stress, pain and tension? We might associate the diaphragm exclusively with breathing, however it also connects to the nervous system, links to posture and digestion and even plays a role in lower back comfort. When we’re stressed, anxious, or holding emotional tension, the diaphragm often becomes tight or restricted, leading to:

• Shallow breathing
• Tight chest
• Rib discomfort
• Neck and shoulder tension
• Digestive issues
• Feeling constantly “on edge”

How Bowen Therapy can help:
Bowen uses gentle, precise moves to encourage the diaphragm to soften and release. This helps the body switch out of “fight or flight” and into a calmer, more balanced state.

Many clients notice:
• Deeper, easier breathing
• A sense of calm and grounding
• Reduced tension through the chest, back and shoulders
• Improved digestion and energy

Many women notice new or worsening shoulder pain, stiffness or reduced movement during perimenopause, with hormonal changes affecting connective tissue and inflammation levels.

Bowen Therapy can be a really useful and gentle treatment approach to regaining movement in this area, alongside any other hormonal support advised by your healthcare professional.

If you’re dealing with shoulder pain that’s limiting your day-to-day life, you don’t have to just “put up with it”, you can start taking steps to regain it.

If you are looking for ways to maintain a calm and regulated nervous system between your Bowen sessions then an article in the Guardian this weekend cited some recent research confirming what perhaps many of us already suspected. Creative activities like drawing, music, dancing, gardening, baking or crafting can have a real impact on our wellbeing, helping to reduce stress, calm the nervous system, improve mood and even support physical health.

Becoming absorbed in something creative shifts us out of “busy, stressed mode” and into a more relaxed state, the same state where healing and repair can happen more easily.

And you skill level doesn’t matter for it to count, it’s about enjoyment, presence and giving your nervous system a chance to reset.

If you are one of the many people who suffer from lower back pain then Bowen might be the answer you have been looking for. It is one of the most common reasons people seek help, and it can show up for many different reasons, including:
- Prolonged sitting or poor posture
- Stress and tension held in the body
- Overuse, repetitive movements, or heavy lifting
- Old injuries that never fully resolved
- Muscle imbalance

And it’s usually not just one thing but several in combination, with the body trying to compensate over time.

People often find Bowen helpful in this instance for:
✔ Reducing muscle tension and pain
✔ Improving mobility and alignment
✔ Supporting relaxation and stress relief
✔ Addressing underlying patterns contributing to pain
If your lower back is causing pain, Bowen offers a calm, whole-body approach that looks beyond just this area.

If you’d like to know more then do get in touch, or you can book a session at either the Crieff or Oban clinics.
