🚶‍➡️Exercise & Moving More
We don’t believe in all or nothing resolutions, but 2026 could be a great time to gently build more movement into your routine, whatever that looks like for you. A short walk, a stretch, a dance in the kitchen… it all counts.

🚶‍♀️‍➡️Small steps add up to big changes.

Cases of flu are high this winter, so if you’re wondering whether it’s just a cold or you’re floored with flu here’s what to do.

Most symptoms can be safely managed at home. Rest, drink plenty of fluids, and use paracetamol or ibuprofen to ease aches and fever. Your pharmacist can advise on cold and flu remedies.

Antibiotics won’t help with colds and flu as they are viruses – time and self-care are best.

To stop the spread:
💉 get your flu vaccination if you are eligible
🧼 wash your hands regularly
😷 cover coughs and sneezes

Please help us protect our patients 🙏

With flu cases rising, we're asking visitors to our hospitals to follow this important guidance:

If you have ANY symptoms of cold or flu, please don't visit - even if you're wearing a mask.

This includes: ✖️ Fever or feeling hot ✖️ Cough or sore throat ✖️ Runny or blocked nose
✖️ Feeling unwell

We understand how hard it is not to see loved ones, but this simple step helps protect vulnerable patients in our care.

Not sure if you should visit? Call the ward first - our staff are here to help.
Thank you for your understanding 💙

❄️ SAFETY UPDATE — LOW SEA TEMPS ❄️

The sea has dropped from around 10–11°C to 5/6°C, and your body will feel that change instantly. Please take extra care over the next few weeks while we all adjust.

🌊 About Afterdrop
Afterdrop is when your core temperature keeps falling after you’ve left the water. You might feel fine at first, then suddenly get very cold, shaky or a bit “off.” This is normal — but it must be managed safely.

💙 How to Stay Safe:
• Keep swims/dips short — think minutes, not distance.
• Get changed straight away — warm layers on as soon as possible.
• Cover your head and hands — heat escapes fast.
• Warm drink, not a hot shower — heat up gently.
• Keep moving lightly — slow rewarming is safest.
• Never swim alone — especially at these temps.
• Listen to your body — if it feels too cold, stop.

Cold water is incredible for the mind and body, but at 5°C it demands real respect.
Let’s look after ourselves and each other ❄️🌊💙

Flu season has arrived about a month earlier than usual in Scotland, and cases are rising rapidly.

Our latest blog focuses on what's happening this season, how we're monitoring flu and vaccine uptake, how to ensure you're protected and what to do if you have symptoms.

👉Given the early start to the season, we’re encouraging those who are eligible to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
👉Flu viruses change constantly, and this year’s vaccine is designed to protect against the three main types of flu viruses we usually see.
👉Most people who are eligible for this year’s vaccination are receiving their invitations by text, email or post, in a white envelope with clear NHS Scotland branding. Invitations will continue to be sent out as the programme progresses through the winter.
👉To prevent the spread of flu, we continue to recommend regular handwashing and advise people with symptoms of respiratory illness to stay and home and avoid spreading the virus to others.

🤢💩 Caught norovirus? - here's our quick guide on what to do to help you feel better and prevent it from spreading to others.

TREATING NOROVIRUS

🔹 take paracetamol for any fever or aches and pains
🔹 get plenty of rest
🔹 use special rehydration drinks if you have signs of dehydration, such as a dry mouth or dark urine. These are available in community pharmacies

Norovirus can be very unpleasant but usually clears up by itself in a few days. You can normally look after yourself or your child at home.

⚠️Avoid going to your GP, as norovirus can spread to others very easily.

📱Phone your GP practice or NHS 24 on 111 if you’re concerned or need advice.

PREVENTING THE SPREAD

🔹 stay off work or school until at least 48 hours after the norovirus symptoms have stopped
🔹 avoid visiting anyone in hospital during this time
🔹 wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water particularly after using the toilet and before preparing or handling food
🔹 be aware alcohol-based hand gels don’t kill the virus
🔹 disinfect any surfaces or objects that could be contaminated, using a bleach-based household cleaner.
🔹 wash any items of clothing or bedding that could have become contaminated separately on a hot wash (60°C)
🔹 do not share towels and flannels
🔹 flush any poo or vomit in the toilet and clean the surrounding area with a bleach-based household cleaner
🔹 avoid eating raw, unwashed food
🔹 only eat oysters from a reliable source as they can carry norovirus

Remember norovirus spreads very easily in public places such as hospitals, nursing homes and schools. Follow our hygiene tips above to prevent the virus from spreading further!
