When was your last HIV test? Today is World Aids Day, and to mark the occasion our HIV Team have been spreading awareness to help promote understanding.

Despite carrying out over 48,000 tests in Croydon a year, stigma remains a significant barrier to HIV testing, treatment, and prevention.

The team have been working incredibly hard to promote testing, carrying out over 175,000 HIV tests since April 2022, and nearly 400,000 tests of blood borne viruses.

Their fantastic work has helped hundreds of people in Croydon receive the care they need πŸ™Œ Well done teamπŸŽ‰

It's really important to make sure you get your vaccine information from reliable sources. To help you get all the facts, we're busting some mythsπŸ”ŽπŸ’‰πŸ¦

Myth No.1 = β€œI’m healthy, so I don’t need the vaccine”
Being healthy doesn’t stop you from catching or spreading flu. You may not have symptoms but can still infect vulnerable people.

Myth No.2 = β€œThe vaccine made me ill last time”
The flu vaccine cannot give you flu. Side effects like mild fever or sore arm are common and short-lived. It reduces the chance of you becoming seriously ill and helps you recover faster if you get ill.

Myth No.3 = β€œI had flu recently, so I’m protected”
Flu strains can change each year. Past infection doesn’t guarantee protection against current variants.

Myth No. 4 = β€œThe vaccine doesn’t work”
The flu vaccine prevented 96,000 – 120,200 hospitalisations in England in 2024/25. It reduces the chance of you becoming seriously ill and helps you recover faster if you get ill.

βœ… Get your flu vaccination ahead of winter β€” it only takes a few minutes. Colleagues can find our clinic times on the staff intranet.

Our Chief Medical Officer, Dr Subhro Banerjee, got his flu vaccination - have you?

Healthcare workers face a higher risk of catching flu due to close contact with patients – getting vaccinated helps protect not only you, but also your loved ones by reducing the chance of bringing flu home.

We encourage staff to get their flu jabs as soon as they can to help stay strong this winter.

Today our Non-Executive Directors, Andrew Rhodes and Gemma Hurley, visited teams across the hospital to learn more about how our services work and the experiences of both staff and patients.

They spent time with Outpatients, where colleagues spoke openly about the systems and processes that support patient appointments β€” including opportunities to improve how information is shared with patients through updated letters and communication.

Gemma also met with The Indigo Team, who support children and young people with complex needs. The team shared some of the fantastic work underway, including:

✨ Developing a neurodivergent passport to better support patients
✨ Increasing peer support through joint workshops
✨ Running parent and child sessions and a 6-week parent group to help families understand neurodiversity
✨ Notable positive outcomes, including reduced A&E presentations for young people following Indigo interventions

They also connected with our Play Team, who highlighted the importance of recognising when behaviours stem from neurodiversity rather than illness β€” especially for our youngest patients.

A huge thank you to all the teams who welcomed our NEDs today and shared their insights so openly. Your work continues to shape how we improve care across the Trust.
