Homebirth Croydon - The Crocus Team

Homebirth Croydon - The Crocus Team Welcome to the Crocus Team's official page! Our aim is to promote home birth as a safe and

We are a team of dedicated midwives who are highly motivated to provided specialist, individualised 1:1 care to low risk women within the borough of Croydon. Research shows that having a home birth is just as safe (if not safer) as giving birth in hospital for a fit and healthy woman, with a straight forward pregnancy, and especially so, for women who have had a vaginal delivery previously. Home birth also provides the added benefits of less medical intervention and need for strong pain relief during birth. https://www.npeu.ox.ac.uk/birthplace

We specialise in providing home births, waterbirths and providing support to women using hypnobirthing during childbirth. As a team, we believe birth is a normal, natural and exciting time for a woman and their family and that your home offers a safe and relaxing environment to facilitate this! Our aim is to work in partnership with you, providing reliable and up to date information to enable you to make informed choices regarding your pregnancy and birth and offer support with your decision making. At Croydon university hospital, we have a team of Supervisors of Midwives (SoM) who are available 24/7 to offer support, advice and advocacy for you during your pregnancy. You can contact a SoM through the hospital switchboard 0208 401 3000 and ask for the on call Supervisor of Midwives. If you chose to have your care with our home birth team you and your family would benefit from:
- 1:1 care during your pregnancy and birth
- all appointments at home, at a time to suit you
- enhanced family experience and bonding
- direct contact numbers to your named midwife
- individualised birth plans
- 24hr on call service when your labour starts
- reduced medical interventions
- dedicated breast feeding support
- continuity of care during postnatal period

If you are undecided and would like more information or would like the chance to meet other women planning a home birth and a member from the team, there is a free NCT home birth support group the 2nd Tuesday of every month in the CR2 area. Please contact Anna to find out when the next meeting is on:

Thank you to Evan, Remi and the Crocus team for helping us welcome our baby boy at home!
From my first appointment with the crocus team I knew I’d made the right decision in planning a home birth and having all my appointments with Evan leading up to my birth helped me to feel calm, confident and excited about the birth.
My labour started the day after a sweep. I woke up feeling like things were getting started, so headed out for a long walk with a tissue soaked in clary sage to sniff along the way. I got home around midday, and texted Evan to let her know I was going to start timing contractions as it had been hard to keep track on my walk. Around 2.30 we spoke and agreed she would come over about an hour later, by which point my contractions had ramped up and I was having to really breathe through them. I used my ball and tens machine to help me manage the contractions before Evan arrived. While my husband blew and filled up the pool Evan examined me and although I was only 3-4cm dilated, she was very reassuring. I got into the pool which was the most incredible feeling and comforting relief.
I was lucky to be in the water for a short time before it was time to push and after some big pushes I scooped my baby up out of the water. It was an amazing feeling and within 2 hours I was sat on the sofa all wrapped up with a newborn and a pizza - you can’t get better than that!
I couldn’t have been cared for and supported better than I was in the lead up, birth and first few weeks with the crocus team and I will be forever grateful!

Congratulations Katie on the birth of your baby boy! ❤️

The full moon brought a Crocus baby into the world! 🌕 And on Easter Sunday too 🐣

Early this morning, our team leader Lucy gave birth to a beautiful baby boy at home supported by Rebecca and Andrea. It’s always special being at a homebirth but it’s even more special when you’re supporting a friend!

Congratulations Lucy and Stacy ❤️

Contractions started at 39 weeks and 5 days. I had been "high risk" due to low protein levels in my placenta and our Dr wanted to induce me, but I am so glad that I followed my instincts and insisted on a home birth. Contractions began at 11.45pm on the Monday, waking me every 15 minutes. I got up at 6am on Tuesday, rang my mum and cried; I was scared I wouldn't be able to handle the pain. Our amazing doula arrived at 11am. We watched Disney's Encanto and used a TENS machine. At 3pm, surges were strong and I needed more pain relief, so we called our midwives. When Evan arrived and examined me, I was 6-7cm dilated. I couldn't believe I had got this far on just a TENS machine. The hypnobirthing really helped. Gas and air was lovely and I slipped into our birth pool. Those were a beautiful few hours laughing and joking with midwives Evan and Remi.
Things got more difficult as baby changed position. Our birthing team really supported us to have the homebirth we wanted and tried every position to get baby to move. I will be forever grateful for this. After four hours of pushing we transferred to hospital and welcomed our beautiful baby boy who was born via forceps delivery. Evan, Remi and our doula were there to support and hold my hand. Our IVF miracle baby was born at 1.45am.
Labour was hard work, but I did it! And I would do it all over again. Although we had to transfer to hospital those golden hours labouring at home were so special and I really believe birthing at home got my oxytocin flowing and us excited about meeting our little one. Thank you Crocus Home Birth Team!

Congratulations Annie and family! ❤️

Thank you to the crocus team for supporting me throughout my pregnancy and birth of baby Elliot. I was lucky enough to have the lovely Andrea as my midwife who was supportive of my choice to have a natural homebirth rather than an induced hospital birth at 37 weeks. Thank you for having such a positive attitude and taking some of the stress away!

Congratulations Natasha and family ❤️

As a first time mum everyone thought I was crazy to have a home birth but I knew it was going to be such amazing experience and that it was!
Lucy saw me a few times before the day of labour and supported me 100% of the way she was there for any questions I had and for that I am so thankful.
On the day of labour Rebecca was the first midwife to arrive and it was sense of relief straight away, she left me to do my own thing and whatever my body was telling me to do, she talked me through most of it for distraction as I didn’t want any pain relief, a soothing voice is all I needed!
Remi was next to turn up just before I was about to start pushing I had never met Remi before that day but she was so comforting it felt like I had known her forever! After a quick 7.5 hours Everly was here and I instantly wanted to do it all again.
Lucy turned up shortly after and help me breastfeed which I originally never thought of doing but with the encouragement and support I exclusively breastfed for a full 10 weeks.
It’s safe to say any pregnancies going forward if all is well I will carry on to have babies at home. Highly recommend home births and this amazing midwife team.
Thankyou for helping bring my little blessing into this world.

Congratulations Mayson and family on the birth of Everly, born on 21st August 2021 ❤️
