Today I had the absolute privilege of helping a mum and dad say goodbye to their baby girl who was born sleeping well before full term. She never drew breath but left her tiny footprints deep in their hearts đź’•. We used this lovely little poem as part of our farewell.

I think this will be a very helpful and moving time and you don’t have to have any connection to the church to go along.

Time to reflect…..
Over the past two years I’ve conducted many funerals and each one has been really special. No matter the age of the person or the circumstances of their death, they are all precious and each has a unique story. This week I’ve been able to walk alongside two very different families, each dealing with the aftermath of a sudden death but each wanting to celebrate their loved one in a meaningful way - and as always it’s been an amazing privilege to have been involved.

I’ve just watched the Rev.Richard Coles documentary on grief (available on All4) - well worth a watch.

It was a privilege to conduct an interment of ashes at this beautiful spot today. Many thanks to new owners Nick and Jan (and their lovely dog) for their help.
Here’s the poem we finished with. It’s by John Hathcock:

I do not think my song will end
While flowers, grass and trees
Abound with birds and butterflies
For I am one with these.

And I believe my voice will sound
Upon the whispering wind
So long as even one remains
Among those I call “friend”.

I shall remain in hearts and minds
Of loved ones that I knew,
And in the rock and hills and streams
Because I love those, too.

So long as love and hope and dreams
Abide in earth and sky,
Weep not for me, though I am gone,
I shall not really die.

It’s been a busy week and it’s not quite finished yet. For every family I meet and for every person whose life I’m privileged to celebrate, I’m always conscious that there is something beautiful about each person’s story and that is what remains after their sun has gone down.

It’s such a privilege to be able to walk with people as they set out on their grief journey, listening to their stories and encouraging them as they continue their own story without their loved one.
I recently conducted a funeral for a young man who had taken his life and it was so hard to express the emotions that were involved. But his 7 year old nephew captured the essence of what we were all feeling in just a few simple words. Out of the mouths of babes......

It’s so important to let people know how much they mean to us while we have the time.

I wish I’d seen this lovely poem before I took a funeral for a lady with severe dementia a few weeks ago ♥️
