Fife Myopia Clinic

Fife Myopia Clinic Expert comprehensive examinations, independent honest advice and full range of myopia control options Follow-up examinations cost £50.

Fife Myopia Clinic is run by PLM Optometrists at their practice in Cupar. This specialist myopia control clinic is led by Kathryn Marshall who is a registered optometrist and accredited myopia control practitioner. Some children develop progressive myopia (short-sightedness) which can worsen after the age of 5-6. A range of methods have been developed which slow the progression of myopia, but these are not suitable and successful for all children with myopia. Fife Myopia clinic is privately funded and does not receive any money from the NHS. Fife Myopia Clinic offers an initial evaluation costing £80. At this visit, you can expect:

* Comprehensive eye examination and recording of baseline measurements, this includes:
- biometry: measurement of length of eye
- topography - plotting the shap of the front of the eye
- cycloplegic refraction - checking the full prescription with the help of eye drops

* Full risk assessment

* In-depth explanation and independent expert advice

* Management planning

Many children will not be advised treatment at this first visit - we often need to check the eyes again in 3-6 months to see if the myopia is increasing. Fife Myopia Clinic will only advise treatment options where they are deemed necessary.

Interesting article.

Axial length = length of the eye from front to back

This measurement is essential is assessing risk and monitoring treatment success if started.

Our eyes may either be windows to the soul or onto the world, depending on which quotation you are looking at, but how much do we know about the workings of these vital organs? Look at someone’s face and what we see is only the outer aspect of a complex mechanism that bends and translates light in...

We are often asked by myopic parents "can I do anything to stop my children becoming short-sighted?".

This is an interesting article which explores why myopia rates are rising.

Time outdoors is strongly encouraged (healthy for body & mind too 😀). Reading too close & for long periods without breaks is discouraged.

As scientists try to untangle the reasons for skyrocketing rates of nearsightedness in kids, new treatment options can help prevent their vision from getting worse.

Can myopia be cured?

One of the questions which ophthalmologists are regularly asked is, can myopia be cured? We would love to be able to say "yes", but despite some people (we would say very dubiously) claiming that they have cured or reversed their myopia, current scientific understanding indicates the simple answer i...

This is a fantastic article. Great work Jason.

Explains a lot about the dilemma faced by parents & practitioners alike.

Myopia control takes a lot of careful thought, but doing nothing is not an option any longer.

When your child is ill, you want a course of treatment to make them better. It doesn’t matter if they have a broken leg or a runny nose; whatever the problem, as parents, you look for a swift and sure plan to bring them back to full health. But what if your child has been diagnosed with myopia? It...

What is Childhood Myopia?

Children with myopia are often described as being 'short-sighted' as distant objects appear blurry. This makes it harder for them to read the whiteboard in class or see writing on TV.

Myopia is caused by the eye being unable to focus light correctly and it is a often a condition that progresses over time.

Increases in myopia mostly relate to the child’s eye getting longer. Whilst this growth can be modest, there are some children where elongation of the eye progresses more quickly.
