🎉✨ 22 YEARS STRONG ✨🎉
In April 2003, my world turned upside down. I was an instructor at Peppermint Park, pouring my whole heart into classes, when it suddenly went bankrupt. It was devastating. But instead of letting that be the end, I made the scariest, boldest decision of my life.
I bought the building.
On September 8th, 2003, First Step 2 Fitness was born — not just a gym, but a safe haven. A place where every woman counts. A place where you’re not judged, where you belong, and where the magic of moving together changes lives.
💪 Nearly 30 years I’ve been teaching classes — and they are still my heartbeat. My joy. My passion. My escape. This journey has carried me through every season of my life — from being a mum to two boys (never missing a sports day or school play) to now being Granny Sue, bouncing, sweating, laughing, and dancing with the next generation of women.
But I didn’t do this alone. I’ve had the most incredible support from my husband, my two sons, and my whole family. They’ve stood by me, cheered me on, and picked me up on the days when I thought I couldn’t keep going. Without them, none of this would have been possible.
Over the years, First Step has grown and evolved. Machines gave way to what truly matters — the connection and the energy in a room full of women. We expanded our studio, pushed boundaries, and brought so many “firsts” to Darlington: Zumba in 2009 (yes, I was the very first instructor here!), Kettlebells, Rebound, Blockfit, Glow Fitness, Bounce… and the list goes on.
We’ve survived recessions. We stood strong through lockdowns. We faced battles that nearly broke me — but this family, this community, this gym always pulled through. Together, we’ve laughed, cried, sweated buckets, and found strength we didn’t know we had.
💫 Pauline — 22 years side by side. You’re family.
💫 Leanne, Suzie, and Georgia — my amazing team. You bring the sparkle to every class.
💫 To all past instructors — you’re forever a part of this story.
And to every single member — YOU are First Step 2 Fitness. You’re my gym family, my inspiration, and the reason I still wake up with the same fire I had back in 2003.
22 years later… my passion burns brighter than ever. And if the past has been this good, I know the best is still to come.
❤️ With love and gratitude,
Sue
