OT takes a closer look at how optometrists are safeguarding the eyesight of future generations through dedicated myopia management.

For more than a decade, Dr Keyur Patel, optometrist and clinical director at Tompkins, Knight & Son Optometrists, an independent practice within the Hakim Group, has supported children on their myopia management journey.

Over the years, he has come to know far more than their prescriptions. He’s learnt about their hobbies, the sports they love, and the dreams they’re beginning to shape for the future.

As these children have grown, moving from picture books to chapter books and from pencil to pen, there is one part of their lives that Patel is relieved to see staying steady: the progression of their myopia.

Optometrists share their career planning advice for newly qualified practitioners.

The early years of a career offer a valuable chance to experience different practice settings and discover the areas of optometry that truly spark interest.

OT spoke with a range of optometrists about how those just starting out can approach career planning, and also heard from an early career optometrist on their own ambitions. Among those sharing their insight was Anna Lewin, clinical lead optometrist and partner at Haine & Smith Opticians, part of the Hakim Group and Erica Hopwood, Professional Advancement Manager at Hakim Group.

Charity awareness and fundraising were a real focus in 2025, with HG independent practices teams across the UK supporting causes close to home.

Suzanne Dennis Optometrist, with practices across Greater Manchester and Lancashire, raised awareness and funds for the Natalie Kate Moss Trust.

Julian Davies Opticians brought teams together in Lisvane, Cardiff, raising funds for Whitchurch-based Velindre Cancer Charity with an all-staff sports day.

Meanwhile in Finsbury Park, London, Eyelink Opticians supported the local community by providing eye examinations and easy readers at Street Fest, organised by Streets Kitchen.

OT recently featured Dr Scott Mackie and Dr Roisin Mackie, who were honoured for an outstanding 30 years of delivering CPD, a remarkable achievement that reflects their long-standing commitment to strengthening and supporting the profession. 👏✨
