The HG Annual Retreat 2025 was truly exceptional, a weekend filled with purpose, passion, and plenty of unforgettable moments. 🌟

A huge thank you to our inspiring speakers, the dedicated HGHQ team, and every attendee from within the HG family and beyond, who helped bring this year’s theme, Live Your ikigai, to life. 🙌

Ikigai set the tone for the weekend, with every session and conversation reminding us why we’re so proud to serve our communities. ✨

The evening awards captured that spirit beautifully, celebrating those who bring their purpose to life each day. And with a fantastic choreographed dance from the HGHQ team, the night really did finish on a real high.

Best wishes to all as you look to Live Your Ikigai for the year ahead, and to an even bigger, brighter retreat next year!

This month’s Independents in the Spotlight is the fantastic team at Millicans & Mansfield Opticians.

The Wells-based practice hosted a coffee and cake morning on Wednesday, October 29, raising funds for Somerset Sight, a charity supporting people with visual impairments across the county. Around 50 visitors attended throughout the day, enjoying homemade cakes, refreshments, and conversation.

Millicans & Mansfield has a long-standing partnership with Somerset Sight and hosts a monthly clinic run by the charity. Somerset Sight provides low-vision assessments, emotional support groups, and social activities to help reduce isolation.

We were delighted to celebrate our HG pre reg optometrists who have successfully passed their final OSCEs, as well as colleagues achieving higher qualifications, including a special congratulations to Becci Zawadaski on completing her IP qualification.

A memorable highlight was seeing Hassnain Safdar present Professor Edward Mallen with his Life Fellowship, recognising his contribution to the profession.

It was a wonderful reminder of the dedication, talent and commitment across our sector.👏

A contact lens technician from an independent Hakim Group practice has played a role behind the scenes on the UK set of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.

As recently covered by OT, Heather Muir of Cameron Optometry in Edinburgh, alongside locum Alison MacDougall, supported the prosthetics and make-up team by advising on lens handling and overseeing the safe application and removal of cosmetic lenses used during filming.

They worked closely with cast members Jacob Elordi and Christian Convery, ensuring specialist eye care throughout the production.

It was Movember Day, and the team fully embraced it, moustaches and all! 👨🏻

Between the quizzes, step challenge, scavenger hunt, sugar doughnut challenge and all the snacks, the atmosphere was incredible.

But the real highlight was coming together for Movember, a charity that funds life-changing men’s health projects both locally and globally.

They invest in country and culture specific initiatives and collaborate on game-changing solutions that tackle men’s mental health, prostate cancer and testicular cancer on a global scale.

We’re proud that every penny raised from the day is going towards supporting this vital work.
