A contact lens technician from an independent Hakim Group practice has played a role behind the scenes on the UK set of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.

As recently covered by OT, Heather Muir of Cameron Optometry in Edinburgh, alongside locum Alison MacDougall, supported the prosthetics and make-up team by advising on lens handling and overseeing the safe application and removal of cosmetic lenses used during filming.

They worked closely with cast members Jacob Elordi and Christian Convery, ensuring specialist eye care throughout the production.

It was Movember Day, and the team fully embraced it, moustaches and all! 👨🏻

Between the quizzes, step challenge, scavenger hunt, sugar doughnut challenge and all the snacks, the atmosphere was incredible.

But the real highlight was coming together for Movember, a charity that funds life-changing men’s health projects both locally and globally.

They invest in country and culture specific initiatives and collaborate on game-changing solutions that tackle men’s mental health, prostate cancer and testicular cancer on a global scale.

We’re proud that every penny raised from the day is going towards supporting this vital work.

Allders Opticians, a group of Hakim Group independent opticians, has celebrated 120 years of caring for eyes across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

The group began in 1905 when Percy Allder opened his first practice in Luton. Initially offering eyewear and jewellery, it later focused entirely on eye care. Passed through the Allder and King families, the practices continued to grow, always placing personal service at the centre of their approach.

Today, Allders Opticians continues that tradition, providing expert care and a warm welcome in each of its 10 practices.

When Robert Campbell, 67, attended his routine appointment at Flint Optometry, a Hakim Group independent opticians in Wolverhampton in January 2025, he didn’t expect it to change his life.

Optometrist Claire Williams spotted signs during the eye test that led to further investigation and the eventual diagnosis and treatment of blood cancer.

“When you go to the opticians for an eye exam, the last thing you expect is to be told a week later you have blood cancer,” Robert told Optometry Today.

Robert now shares his story to remind others just how important regular eye exam can be.

The HG team recently attended the TU Dublin Student Optical Fair, where we spoke with students about the opportunities within the independent optical sector including the exciting prospect of owning their own independent practice in the future.

The event welcomed student optometrists and dispensing opticians, who took part in a fun quiz by answering questions at each stand for a chance to win great prizes!

✨ Bansri Shah and her team at Eyelink Opticians are this month’s Independent in the Spotlight! ✨

We’re proud to celebrate Bansri and her dedicated team, who recently offered free eye care to people experiencing homelessness during a local festival.

Bansri Shah, Dispensing Optician and Practice Director at Eyelink Opticians, met many of those she helped at Street Fest, an annual event organised by Streets Kitchen to support people affected by homelessness.

During the one-day festival, Bansri and a colleague spoke to around 80 people, carried out vision checks, and distributed around 40 pairs of ready readers and frames.

Their kindness and dedication truly reflect the spirit of independent opticians, caring for their community, one patient at a time.
