Since last year, we’ve had the privilege to introduce the Photizo concept to specialist consultants who support patients living with the long-term side effects of cancer treatment, especially post head and neck cancer, referred to as Late-Effects.
For many of these individuals, life after radiotherapy can be incredibly challenging. Some experience severe symptoms such as Radiation-Induced Fibrosis, conditions that can cause ongoing pain, lymphoedema, and in some cases even make everyday actions like swallowing extremely difficult.
Through emerging promising research, Emma Hallam at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust began exploring how Photobiomodulation could support these patients. Preliminary trials introducing home-use Photobiomodulation devices such as Photizo Pain Relief into daily care routines, which are showing positive outcomes that patients experience measurable improvements in the management of their painful conditions and quality of life.
Because of this work, we’ve since begun connecting with other Late Effects service providers at other locations to help widen the conversation, share knowledge and build best practice protocols. There is particular interested in how a device like Photizo Pain Relief can be used between clinic sessions, giving patients additional and consistent therapeutic support at home. This growing area of application is incredibly encouraging and highlights a promising future for Photobiomodulation in supportive cancer care, in addition to the benefits for oral mucositis and management of lymphoedema. Research is ongoing for the application of Photobiomodulation for Late Effects and we'll update our community as further results become available.
