Most people have heard of astigmatism but what actually is it?

Regular astigmatism occurs when the eye is shaped more like a rugby ball rather than being completely round. Astigmatism is detected during a routine eye examination and it makes up the ‘cyl’ part of your prescription.

🙋🏼What are the symptoms?

The main symptom is blurred vision. You could experience headaches, eye strain, glare sensitivity and haloes/starbursts around lights.

🙋🏽‍♀️Can it be corrected?

Astigmatism is usually easily correct with either spectacles or contact lenses.

Vision screening in schools can detect if a child has reduced vision but this does not replace their free NHS examination. It is recommended that routine eye tests start at age 3-4 years.

Some honest advice from us to keep your eyes healthy!

💧 Watery eyes could mean you have dry eyes - your body is compensating for the lack of tears.

☀️ Sun damage is mostly irreversible… wear your sunglasses!

📖 After the age of 40, nearly everyone will need reading spectacles.

👓 Wearing glasses does not make your eyes ‘worse’, you just notice the benefit!

👁️ Just because you aren’t having visual problems, it does not mean you don’t need an eye test.
