🚨Important Health Update – Meningitis Awareness
Following recent reports of a meningitis outbreak in Kent, local health services are working closely with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and NHS partners to monitor the situation and provide guidance to the public.
Health officials have confirmed a number of cases linked to the Canterbury area, with some individuals requiring hospital treatment. Public health teams are carrying out contact tracing and providing antibiotics to those identified as close contacts.
What you should do:
✔ Be aware of the symptoms of meningitis and seek urgent medical advice if they develop.
✔ Contact NHS 111 for urgent medical advice if you are concerned.
✔ Call 999 or attend A&E immediately if someone is seriously unwell.
✔ Ensure you and your children are up to date with NHS vaccinations, including MenACWY where eligible.
✔ Do not attend school, university, or work if you feel seriously unwell and seek medical advice promptly.
Common symptoms of meningitis can include:
• High fever
• Severe headache
• Neck stiffness
• Sensitivity to light
• Vomiting or nausea
• Confusion or drowsiness
• Cold hands and feet, limb pain, pale or mottled skin
• A rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass
In babies and young children you may also notice:
• High-pitched crying
• Refusing feeds
• Floppiness or difficulty waking
• A bulging soft spot (fontanelle)
⚠️ Meningitis can develop quickly and is a medical emergency. Early treatment is vital.
