"We will remember them always." 🌹

Colleagues, patients and visitors came together across our hospitals yesterday to pay their respects and honour our Armed Forces on Remembrance Day.

🗣️ "We have a really strong team that are caring, committed and passionate about delivering the safest and most supportive care to all of our mothers and babies. We want to be able to answer any questions that you have and tell you more about the improvements we are making"

👶 Today the CQC have published reports from an inspection that happened over 10 months ago, and improved our maternity rating to 'requires improvement'.

📹 Watch the video and hear Sarah Noble, Director of Midwifery, talk to you about what this report means for our families.

📝 An open letter has also been published to share how we are making care safer: https://www.uhdb.nhs.uk/how-we-are-improving-our-maternity-services

👶 At the bottom of this post is a link to an open letter that we have written for our maternity families.

We are sharing this today to provide reassurance that the quality and safety of maternity care across our hospitals has improved - and to acknowledge that we have further to go.

🏥 Our progress has been recognised by the Care Quality Commission who regulate NHS services and today they will publish reports following an inspection that happened in December 2024 of maternity services at Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Hospital Burton.

🟠 The CQC has improved our maternity rating to ‘Requires Improvement’ for both hospitals - our previous rating was ‘Inadequate’.

While this shows that the focused work our dedicated teams are doing to improve the safety and quality of care is having a positive impact, the reports include some challenges which we take seriously and have responded to.

We have a structured improvement programme helping us to address the CQC’s feedback, and feedback from families, which has led to improved outcomes and experiences for women and babies.

To our communities and maternity families you have our commitment that our hard work continues and our focus and energy firmly remains on delivering you high-quality, safe and personalised maternity care to women, birthing people and babies.

"Even small adjustments can make a 𝙢𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚 difference" ♻️

✨ Our Renal Department has been recognised for their outstanding work to make kidney care at UHDB more sustainable - improving the experience for patients, spending public money more wisely, and reducing environmental impact.

💚 Colleagues from across the speciality in a variety of roles, as well a patient representative, have been meeting regularly to form a group dedicated to developing innovative ways of embedding sustainable practices into every aspect of the care they deliver across Derbyshire and Staffordshire.

🌍 From cutting water use and eliminating single-use plastics, to introducing energy efficient lighting and creative reuse projects supported by Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity, the team has shown how practical, thoughtful changes can have lasting benefits - and how looking after patients and looking after the planet can go hand in hand.

*UPDATE: We’re 'parking' the opening…but not for long* 🚗

We’re taking a little extra time to get things on your new multi-storey car park just right.

Your new car park is now planned to open later this week - but we promise it will be worth the wait.

🚌 The park and ride remains open this week at Kingsway Boulevard, and all on-site parking has now changed, so it is no longer short-stay only, with no time restrictions in most car parks as of Monday 3 November.

Thanks for your patience and see you in one of our 500 shiny new parking spaces soon!

From this date, there will be changes to some of our other car parks across the hospital - with parking on site no longer 'short stay only', and the park and ride service will be closing from 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟕 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫.

Andrew Selby, Director of Estates and Facilities at UHDB, said: "We are very pleased to be able to open the new car park, which we know will make visiting our hospital easier for all, now and in the future, addressing the long-standing challenge of increased demand on NHS services and a limited parking provision."

Our Story

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust was formed on 1 July 2018 to bring together our five hospitals – in Derby, Burton, Lichfield and Tamworth – to provide the highest quality care to patients across southern Derbyshire and south east Staffordshire. Our aim is to deliver outstanding care for local people as we bring together the expertise of our 12,000 staff across our five hospital sites.
