So rewarding to be able to help connect people with their family history. Something as simple as finding a headstone can be instrumental in helping piece together the past. In this case it confirmed a family story and provided us with multiple other names and dates of other family members buried in the plot.

Started working on a new client’s tree tonight. They particularly didn’t know anything at all about one side of her family because her grandfather ‘never spoke about it’. After some digging I uncovered the early loss of a parent and a father who was featured numerous times in the newspaper for drunk and disorderly behaviour and committed serious assaults etc.

It’s amazing how you can slowly begin to paint a picture of what life would have been like for an individual. The relationships and the dynamic within the family and their personalities. It allows you to understand the circumstances from which they came.

It got me thinking that genealogy is more than just uncovering names and occupations. It can be instrumental in piecing together fragmented families, uncovering family secrets, making sense of family politics and can sometimes give closure and heal wounds that have been passed down the tree. 🌳 ❤️‍🩹
