Liam Browne

Died - 21st February 2026

We, Liam’s sons Tomas and Gabriel, our mother Rachael, along with Liam’s sisters Catherine, Mairead, Claire and their families, wish to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to everyone who sympathised with us on the loss of our much-loved father, brother and friend.

We are truly grateful to our family and friends who supported us throughout Liam’s illness and wake; to all who paid their respects, sent Mass cards, messages, floral tributes or donations in lieu; and to those who attended the funeral, both in person and online. Your kindness and support brought us great comfort during this very difficult time.

We offer our heartfelt thanks to Fr. Shaun Doherty for celebrating Liam’s Funeral Mass, and to Sarah McGarrity and her accompanist for the beautiful music and singing which meant so much to us.

We are deeply thankful to the staff of Critical Care and Ward 9 at The Royal Sussex County Hospital. We will never forget the care, dedication and compassion shown to Liam and to our family during his short illness. We also drew great comfort and strength from Liam’s friends who visited him during his time in hospital; your company, stories and memories were very welcome during a difficult time for all of us.

We are indebted to The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust for the care and consideration shown in bringing Liam home. Their professionalism and kindness eased a great burden for our family, and we are profoundly grateful that such an organisation exists to support families in times like ours.

Finally, we extend our special thanks to Mr. Kieran Connor and the staff at McClafferty Funeral Directors. Liam’s homecoming, wake and funeral were conducted with the utmost dignity, care and respect. Your calm guidance and support throughout were deeply appreciated and much needed.

***1st Anniversary***

William ‘Doc’ Doherty

20th March 1956 - 4th April 2025

Caring Husband, Amazing Daddy, Devoted Brother, Cherished Uncle, Loyal Friend and the Best Granda.

Today marks one year since we lost you.

William “Doc” Doherty, not a day has gone by that you haven’t been in our thoughts. The world feels a little quieter without your voice, your laughter, and the comfort of your presence. A whole year has passed, yet it still feels like yesterday that we were sharing moments we wish we could hold onto forever.

You were more than just a father—you were a devoted husband, our guide, our protector, and our greatest source of strength. The love you gave so freely to your family, the lessons you taught us, and the memories we shared continue to live on in everything we do. We carry you with us every single day.

Grief has its own way of reminding us how deeply we loved you, but so does the joy of remembering who you were. Your kindness, your wisdom, and your spirit left a mark that time can never erase. We hope you know how much you are missed and how deeply you are still loved.

Though you are no longer here in person, your presence is felt in so many ways—in the quiet moments, in the memories that make us smile, and in the strength you gave us to keep going.

We love you always.

Forever in our hearts, until we meet again.

Doc’s 1st Anniversary Mass will be celebrated in St. Joseph's Church, Galliagh on Sunday 5th April 2026 (Easter Sunday) at 11am.

Margaret McDaid

Died - 20th March 2025

Margaret’s 1st Anniversary Mass will take place this evening, Friday 20th March in St. Mary’s Church, Creggan at 7:30pm. May she rest in peace.

God looked around his garden
And found an empty place,
He then looked down upon the earth
And saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you
And lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful
He always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering
He knew you were in pain.
He knew that you would never
Get well on earth again.
He saw the road was getting rough
And the hills were hard to climb.
So he closed your weary eyelids
And whispered, 'Peace be Thine'.
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn't go alone,
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.

Our Story

McClafferty are Derry's oldest and longest established independent funeral directors with over 115 years of experience in providing funeral services across our city and beyond. The funeral directors was established in 1904 and run by John L. McClafferty and his family until 1974 when it was sold to Mr. Jack McKeone whilst situated in Meenan Square in the Bogside; ownership then passed to Mr. Johnny Casey in 1987 who remained at the helm alongside his family for 32 years. McClafferty have handled arrangements for some of the biggest and most high profile funeral services the city has ever seen, including that of the 12 people killed in the Blitz Disaster at Messines Park in the 1940s. They also presided over the funerals of most of the 14 men killed on Bloody Sunday on 30th January 1972. Over the years McClafferty Funeral Directors have taken care of arrangements for many nuns from the city. The Constitution of the Poor Sisters of Nazareth decreed Sisters were to be buried in elm wood coffins, unpolished with tin mounts to echo the spirit of poverty of religious life. McClafferty produced such coffins and were themselves commissioned to do the funerals of the nuns from the Sisters of Nazareth Convent. The Good Shepherd Convent have also used the service of Mc Clafferty Funeral Directors over the years.

In March 2019 our new owner and proprietor Mr. Kieran Connor took the reigns of McClafferty Funeral Directors and has devoted himself to providing an authentic, personal & caring service to the families of Derry and beyond in their time of need.
