CALL TO ACTION: SUPPORT THE UNISON REAL LIVING WAGE CAMPIGN!
Attention all UNISON members and the Northern Ireland public!
It is time for fair pay across our entire health and social care sector. UNISON is campaigning to ensure that every provider in Northern Irelandโ€”including those in the private sectorโ€”pays the Real Living Wage.
We are pressing the Department of Health (DOH) to agree that all Band 2 workers are moved to a Real Living Wage before the 2027 pay negotiations commence. This isnโ€™t just about one group; achieving this will create a vital uplift for the rest of the NHS Agenda for Change (AfC) pay spines, benefiting staff across the board. The restructuring of pay spines for ALL staff ๏ฟผneeds to run in conjunction with negotiations surrounding the real living wage.
Our health and social care workers are the backbone of our community. Letโ€™s make sure they are paid a wage they can actually live on.

โœŠโค๏ธ National Day of Action for the Fair Visa Campaign

Migrant workers in the care sector are exploited by unscrupulous employers, with the threat of deportation used to silence them.

This Friday 24 April, members are coming together to support friends and colleagues from overseas who keep our care services running. Whether you are a migrant worker, a care worker, or neither, this day of action is for everyone.

Care would not function without migrant workers. It is time they are treated fairly. ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ๐ŸŒ

UNISON says overhaul talks are welcome but real money must be on the table to fix a broken pay structure.

We are asking our Council to approve an increase in our annual registration fee for nursing and midwifery professionals for the first time in 11 years โ€“ by the equivalent of ยฃ1.92 per month.

During the 11-year freeze, there has been a 28.8% loss in the real value of the registration fee, with a resultant loss of ยฃ186m of our income up to the end of March this year.

This means that we are now posting substantial deficits on an annual basis. Our reserves have fallen from ยฃ101m in March 2024 to around ยฃ49.6m now and are projected to fall to ยฃ15.9m in March 2027 if there is no increase in the fee.

This is an unsustainable financial position, given that the demands on our regulatory services have increased substantially โ€“ and continue to do so.

Our Council will meet next week (28 April) to decide whether to approve an increase in the fee from ยฃ120 to ยฃ143 per year. If the fee had increased in line with inflation since 2015, it would now be around ยฃ168 per year.

If the fee rise goes ahead, registrants may be able to reduce the effective cost by claiming tax relief, bringing the annual cost down further, and a quarterly payment option remains available to help spread the cost throughout the year.

The proposal to increase the fee follows a 12-week consultation from 3 November 2025 to 26 January 2026.

The consultation showed strong levels of understanding of our rationale for increasing fees. However, there was also strong opposition to the proposed increase due to concerns about the cost of living.

Our recommendation to our Council is that a continued freeze in the fee is no longer sustainable, but we have kept the proposed rise the lowest level it can โ€“ recognising the ongoing pressures on registrantsโ€™ finances.

While recommending that registrants pay more, we have taken steps to control our own costs, including restructuring our organisation, reducing our workforce by around 10% (137 roles) and cutting ยฃ3.1 million from non-staff spending each year.

The consultation also shows that most registrants agree we should continue to invest in regulatory improvements:

โ€ข Better education quality assurance, ensuring new professionals are well prepared
โ€ข Stronger and clearer professional standards, reflecting modern practice
โ€ข Faster, fairer Fitness to Practise processes, reducing stress and delay
โ€ข Regulatory fairness, embedding equity, diversity and inclusion to eliminate bias
โ€ข Modern digital services, making it easier to interact with the NMC.
