Hamstring tendinopathies are one of the most common conditions we see in the clinic!

Some of the signs and symptoms include:

1. Deep dull ache around the proximal hamstring / buttock
2. Warming up pattern - gradual worsening with running with pain afterwards
3. Worse on hill and speed work when running
4. Pain when sitting too long
5. Pain when stretching

Which muscles really power your running? 🏃‍♂️

When you run, your body produces forces many times greater than bodyweight - and it’s not just your quads doing the work.

🔑 Key contributors:
• Soleus & Achilles – handle up to 6–7x bodyweight (huge role in propulsion)

•Patellar tendon – around 5.5x bodyweight

• Glutes & hamstrings – key for hip extension & stability

• Quads – still important, but not the only players

👉 Takeaway: Running performance isn’t just “lungs and heart” - it’s also about force production & load tolerance in these muscle groups. Strong calves, hamstrings, and glutes = better running economy and less injury risk.

💡 If you’re a runner, don’t just focus on mileage. Add targeted strength work to build the muscles that carry you forward.
