Optimum Bumps

Optimum Bumps Free antenatal support group, in Devizes. Optimum Bumps is a free antenatal support group.
(1)

It allows anyone with a baby bump the opportunity to meet others, in a friendly and informal setting, while learning a little something about pregnancy, birth and babies along the way. Each week we have a different topic and sometimes this includes a special guest. However, please don't feel that is the only subject you can discuss during our meetings. Our discussions frequently go off on a tangent and our weekly topics are merely starting points. You can choose to come to every meeting or just to those that are of particular interest to you. The meetings are primarily for those who actually pregnant, but if you feel a bit too nervous to attend on your own, then do bring your partner, family member or friend along. The meetings are from 7:30pm to 9pm on Thursday evenings, at Optimum Corner. Although the meetings are free, booking via Eventbrite is essential: www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/optimum-doula-39763881283

Out topic for this week (Thursday 4th) is pain relief.

There are many options for pain relief during labour from self-hypnosis to epidurals, as well as a huge variety of other methods. This is a opportunity to discuss the various options available to you and how they might affect both you and your baby.

Although all Optimum Bumps sessions are free to attend, you do need to book, via Eventbrite: www.eventbrite.com/cc/optimum-bumps-2377469

Sorry, but I am going to have to postpone this evening's session, as I'm not well, and no-one wants my germs!

The session will now take place on 11th December and will be our last session, before we take our Christmas break.

If you had booked onto the session, there should be an email, about the change, in your inbox.

North Wiltshire HomeBirthers has a meet up meet up this afternoon, Sunday 23rd November.

The meet up is for anyone interested in homebirth, whether you have had a homebirth, want a homebirth or are just considering a homebirth. Ask lots of questions if you're a 'homebirth hopeful' or a 'homebirth contemplator' and share your experiences if you're a 'homebirth veteran'.

They will be meeting in the Lansdowne Strand Hotel (in Calne), in the Harris Room, which can be found by turning left after entering the main doors.

Birth partners and children are more than welcome, as are birth workers (doulas, midwives and antental teachers).

Whether you want to ask people about their experiences of giving birth at home, discuss local birth pool hire options or just or chat to others who are interested in home birth, do come along to this informal meet up.

Our meetings are open to anyone within the North Wiltshire area, from Swindon and Chippenham, to Trowbridge and Marlborough, and everywhere in between.

Although you do not need to book, it would be helpful if those planning to do so, did register their interest, by following the link:

Our topic for this week (20th November) is hypnobirthing and Gemma, of Gemma Moore Hypnobirthing, will be our guest.

Gemma is a mum of two, who worked in childcare, as well as teaching baby and pre-school swimming lessons, before becoming a hypnobirthing teacher. Gemma used Hypnobirthing for both her births, and considers it the best investment she ever made. Gemma now spreads the word that childbirth does not have to be like we see it in the media, helping take the fear out of birth so expectant parents can feel empowered, calm and in control, however they birth their babies. Gemma offers Hypnobirthing courses, as well as Calm Caesarean Workshops and Pregnancy Relaxation sessions, in Melksham and the surrounding towns and villages.

Our topics for the coming weeks are birth plans/preferences, breastfeeding and hypnobirthing:

6th November - What is a birth plan? Do I need one? What should I include? Who will read it? This is your chance to discuss some real birth plans written by real people, as well as the answers to the questions above, and any others you can think of.

13th November - Everything you've ever wanted to know about breastfeeding but were afraid to ask (well almost)!
Chat to a qualified Breastfeeding Counsellor and (hopefully) a mum currently breastfeeding her baby, get breastfeeding book recommendations, take a look at and discuss breastpads, breast pumps, supplemental nursing system, ni**le shields and breast shells, find out about national and local sources of help and support, and ask as many questions as you like.

20th November - Come along to meet Gemma, of Gemma Moore Hypnobirthing. Gemma is a mum of two, who worked in childcare, as well as teaching baby and pre-school swimming lessons, before becoming a hypnobirthing teacher. Gemma used Hypnobirthing for both her births, and considers it the best investment she ever made. "Transfer of knowledge and experience from older women to mothers-to-be has historically been of extreme importance for pregnant women. In this way, mothers down the generations have been given invaluable informaton about the process of pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding. . . Perhaps most valuable are birth preparation or discussion groups where women with a variety of experiences can share their knowledge and learn from others." - 'Why Oxytocin Matters' by Kerstin Uvnäs Moberg

Almost every session I have held over the past few months, there has been at least one person who didn't turn up, without contacting me to let me know they weren't coming.

I fully appreciate that sometimes you need to change your plans. Sometimes you accidentally double book yourself. Sometimes surprise visitors turn up, or you are asked to work late or to change your shift. Sometimes after a long day at work, you're just too tired to go out again. But if at all possible, please do go to the Eventbrite website and cancel your ticket (or let me know, so I can cancel it for you).

If this only happened occasionally I wouldn't even mention it. But to have it happen almost every session is very frustrating, as how many people I am expecting may affect how I set up the room and/or how many resources I need to get ready. Also when sessions are fully booked, not cancelling tickets you will not use may mean that others miss out.

So, if life gets in the way of attending a session you have booked onto, please do let me know either via Facebook or Eventbrite, or by emailing kathryn@optimumdoula.co.uk
