How do we decide what medical cover an event actually needs?
We get asked this a lot, especially this time of year.
It’s not about “what’s the cheapest option” or “what did we have last year”. We know some companies out there deviate from guidance, but surely that's why you are now exploring other options?
We risk assess every event in line with the The Purple Guide to Health, Safety and Welfare at Events. That’s the national guidance used across the UK for event health and safety planning.
Since incidents like the Manchester Arena bombing and the tragic events at O2 Academy Brixton, expectations around crowd safety and medical provision have quite rightly changed.
The Purple Guide gives clear recommendations based on:
• Crowd numbers
• Alcohol
• Type of event
• Age profile
• Location, terrain and environment
Years ago you might have seen 2 first aiders covering 3,000 people and everyone thinking that was fine. Under current guidance, that same event may require 3 FREC- qualified responders as a minimum and possibly paramedic oversight depending on the risk profile.
That isn’t us upselling. It’s about being defensible.
Because if something serious happens and you’ve ignored recognised guidance, you may find yourself explaining why. And trust me, nobody wants to be stood in front of a Coroner trying to justify cutting corners.
Is it “just guidance”? Yes.
Can you deviate? Technically yes.But any deviation has to be justified and properly risk assessed. What we won’t deviate from is safety. We won’t provide medical provisions at an event just to win the job. We won’t provide substandard cover. And we won’t put our clinicians in a position where they can’t respond safely.
For larger events you’ll often need to liaise with the local Safety Advisory Committee too. They may have their own requirements based on crowd size and previous incidents. We’re always happy to attend meetings, review plans and help organisers get it right.
Good medical provision does cost money. That’s just reality. But poor planning costs far more in the long run. Reputation, licensing issues, litigation… it adds up quickly. "Expensive is cheap, and cheap is expensive."
If you want honest advice about what your event actually needs, we’re always happy to talk it through.
Safety ALWAYS comes first with GWP.
