**WARNING! CONTAINS GRAPHIC IMAGES**

The best part of Halotherapy is helping animals and people. Healing and relieving symptoms and suffering are the best bits of what we do.

Here are the images of a horse that I have been providing Halotherapy to.
It is great to work with a team of multidisciplinary people to be part of the healing process, working alongside amazing owners and their vets, to be just one cog in the wheel of getting this beautiful horse back to full health after a traumatic injury.

I have been giving this horse a Halotherapy treatment every 5 days, as well as owners and vets keeping it clean, dressing it, giving pain relief etc.

Where Halotherapy REALLY EXCELS:

It gives a gentle and non-invasive treatment. When everyone else is poking and prodding, cleaning and treating, when the horse is feeling sore and irritated, paranoid and fed up with the unwanted attention to the uncomfortable area, Halotherapy provides a relaxing and stress reducing environment where all they have to do is stand there and enjoy their treatment.

It gets into all the holes and gaps, and right into the depth of the wound that we can’t get to.
When you’re worried about healing from the inside out, the salt gets right in there and offers antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. The salt is ground into such tiny microns that it is able to be absorbed through the skin. It promotes skin health
by easing inflammation and exfoliating, aids respiratory function through mineral inhalation, and helps reduce muscle pain and stress.

It also provides a much needed boost to the immune system when the body has went through such a traumatic injury.

Zooming in on Sweet Itch
Sweet itch is an allergic reaction to the protein in the saliva of biting midges (Culicoides) but may include other blood sucking flies and insects. The allergy creates an irritable and sore skin condition (dermatitis), affecting the mane and tail areas of your horse, where midges typically bite.
Your horse is most likely to be affected between March and November, when biting insects are most active because of warmer temperatures and humidity.
Think ITCH: Inflamed sores, Thickened and coarse skin, Change in behaviour, Hair loss.
There’s currently no cure, it’s a condition that needs careful management as it recurs yearly.
This is where regular halotherapy can greatly reduce the itchiness and inflammation of the skin, boost the immune system and help to ease the symptoms for the horse. Salt therapy is a natural anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory.

Management of Allergies
• Changes to management by using quality bedding and feed and helping to reduce all dust mites and dirt as well as insuring good ventilation.
• Antihistamines. Halotherapy provides a natural antihistamine treatment, it blocks histamine, a chemical in the body that triggers an immune response, to reduce the severity of allergic reactions.
• Anti-inflammatories. Halotherapy is a natural anti-inflammatory which is proven effective in controlling itching and hives.
• Boosting the immune system. Halotherapy boosts the immune system in a natural, safe and non-invasive way. This helps the body’s ability to cope with and manage all that goes on in daily life.
• Grooming and bathing with soothing products can also help you to monitor the condition of your animal’s skin. Products containing aloe vera and oatmeal can also be beneficial alongside regular halotherapy and regular grooming to remove dust and dirt from the coat.

Spot the Signs!
The two main types of allergies for animals are skin reactions and reactions affecting the lungs, nose and windpipe. Your animal can also develop conditions because of an allergy such as asthma, sweet itch or hives.
Common reactions can include:
• Hair loss and crusty skin
• Hives
• Swelling and redness
• Coughing and laboured breathing
• Headshaking (caused by seasonal allergies)

Skin Reactions
Dermatitis (inflammation of the skin) is a skin condition caused by factors such as allergies, insects or environmental irritants being inhaled or coming into contact with your animal’s skin. Some of the most common types include:
• Atopic dermatitis
• Bacterial dermatitis (such as pyoderma, mud fever, rain scald)
• Insect bite hypersensitivity (such as sweet itch)
• Reactions affecting the lungs, nose and windpipe.

Spring is upon us! 🌺🌼💐
Stay allergy aware!
Just like us, your horse, dog or cat can be allergic to a range of things, and this can develop at any point in their lives, usually after repeated exposure to an allergen, which can cause their skin to overreact.
The more you know about allergies, the more you can minimize reactions and improve your, or your animal’s, wellbeing.
Allergens can include:
• Mould and fungi 🍄
• Dust
• Plants and pollen 🌿🌷
• Biting insects 🐜
• Food or supplements
• Some medications 💊
• Direct contact
Us, and our animals are exposed to these things daily.
