Today we hosted another NCPS Regional Connections event, this time in Belfast!

Meeting our members in person and coming together as a community made for a really enjoyable and rewarding day.

A special thank you to our speakers: Claire Thompson, Doctoral Researcher at Ulster University and NCPS Neurodiversity Ambassador, who shared insights from her research exploring political murals, identity and trauma in Northern Ireland.

A huge thank you also to Simon Carmichael, Integrative Psychotherapist and Co-cultural Counselling Manager at The Rainbow Project, for a thoughtful talk on issues affecting LGBTQIA+ individuals in Northern Ireland and how these experiences can show up in the counselling room.

And to Lynda Graham Counselling, NCPS Northern Ireland Regional Representative, for speaking and helping bring members together for the day.

Finally, thank you to everyone who attended today! Your engagement and openness made the event so enjoyable. We look forward to more Regional Connections events to come.

On my walks in the last week I’ve loved seeing the colours of the spring flowers. They remind us of brightness and new beginnings. Those wee daffodil and crocus bulbs push through the soil to the surface to blossom. Are you feeling like that that bulb, working hard to push through to a new beginning. If you are, keep going, it will be worth it.

Are you aware of what stress is doing to your body? Do you know what is making you anxious? You might want to take some time today to think about what is going on in your head and body and try to do something to reduce your stress and anxiety.
Do you need to do so much? Do you need to take on all the responsibilities you have? Could you take more time for you? What do you do to relax?
I hope you will allow yourself some time to reflect today, remember only you can give yourself permission to rest.

Sometimes when a child feels anxious, their brain gets stuck in a loop of worrying thoughts.

Their mind keeps going round and round, and it can be hard for them to switch their attention to something else.

One small trick some children find helpful is sucking a sour sweet. The sharp, surprising taste can interrupt the worry cycle and give the brain something new to focus on. That sudden sensory jolt can help the brain pause for a moment and reset.

It’s not a cure for anxiety, but simple sensory tools like this can sometimes help a child shift out of a spiral and find their way back to calm.

Small strategies can make a big difference when big feelings take over.
