Live Inclusive

Live Inclusive We support disabled people and people with long-term health conditions to live independently. Live Inclusive's Models of Disability Page.

Live Inclusive has a well-developed ethos firmly grounded in the Social Model of Disability. In practice this means that whenever Disabled people come to Live Inclusive for support they are not expected or obliged to fit pre-conceived ideas about what they need, or to accept pre-existing solutions. Recognising that Disabled people need more than policy statements and good will to change their lives Live Inclusive sets out to define and pursue the aims of Disabled people. We support Disabled people to think about developing their lives within the same range of possibilities and opportunities as everyone else, working together to identify and define the supports needed to realise Disabled people's aims and ambitions. The most important thing is to help people to realise that independence is not a matter of doing everything for yourself but of having choice and control over your life and a say in what happens to you. This has been achieved through the development of a resource that provides a range of integrated, alternative services with clear access for Disabled people. Core services include the Independent Living Unit, Falls support service, IT Training and Support, Maintaining Independence Service, Advocacy, Health Improvement, Training and Education and Consultancy. From time to time Live Inclusive delivers projects to compliment the core activity of the organisation for example 'Choosing Independence' a Lottery funded project that supports people to understand personal budgets. We have a membership comprising ‘full members’ (Disabled people) and ‘associate members’ and operate a committee structure fully accountable to our membership.

When it’s cold outside, keeping warmth inside your home really matters and ensure you are warm and comfortable too.

A few small changes can help stop heat escaping and make rooms feel more comfortable without touching the thermostat:

Close curtains or blinds as it gets dark to keep heat in.
Keep internal doors closed to stop draughts moving through the house.

Move furniture away from radiators so heat can circulate properly.
Use draught excluders around doors and windows.

Avoid drying clothes on radiators, as this blocks heat and creates damp.

They’re simple things, but together they can help your home stay warmer through winter.

If you have a disability or a long-term health condition, you may be able to get extra support from your energy supplier by joining the Priority Services Register (PSR).

Being on the PSR means your energy supplier knows you may need extra help.
You can get:
– advance warnings of planned power cuts
– priority support during outages
– extra help if your electricity, gas or water supply is disrupted

It’s free and doesn’t affect your energy tariff or benefits.

You can usually join the PSR if you:
– have a disability or long-term health condition
– rely on electricity for medical equipment
– are older, pregnant, or have young children
– struggle with communication or mobility

How to join:
Contact your energy supplier directly and ask to be added to the Priority Services Register.

You can also find out more here:

If you have electricity supplied by Northern Powergrid, you can check details here:

It’s a simple step, but it can make a real difference, especially during winter.

Energy-saving habits you can do without compromising being warm

When it’s freezing outside, staying warm matters, especially if you have a health condition or spend a lot of time at home.

There are a few simple habits that can help save energy without turning the heating down or feeling uncomfortable:

Only boil the water you need.
Wait for a full load and wash clothes at 30°C.
A shower usually uses less energy than a bath.
Switch off lights and appliances when you’re not using them.
Keep lids on pans when cooking.
Defrost your freezer so it can work efficiently.

Small changes add up, and they don’t have to come at the cost of warmth.

This is Debbie, one of our Benefits Advisers at Live Inclusive.

Debbie supports people to claim benefits, check they’re getting the right entitlements, and understand their options , especially when things feel overwhelming.

This message came from a family she supported to claim Attendance Allowance and get advice around a housing application at a really difficult time. That’s the kind of work our team does every day.

We have three Benefits Advisers working across Doncaster and Rotherham, supporting people with disabilities and long-term health conditions.

Our service is funded by Northern Powergrid, so there’s no cost to access our benefits advice.

If you need help with:
– checking what benefits you should be getting
– making a claim
– understanding letters or decisions around benefits
– knowing where to start

You can contact us directly:

Sometimes a conversation with the right person makes all the difference.

.You may still be entitled to £150 off your electricity bill this winter.

This is called the Warm Home Discount.
It’s a £150 credit applied directly to your electricity bill for eligible households.

You don’t receive the money yourself.
Your electricity supplier applies it automatically, usually by the end of March.

It’s important to check if:
– you have a disability or long-term health condition
– you’re on a low income or certain benefits
– you’ve changed energy supplier recently
– you’re not sure what support you should receive

You can check eligibility and find out more here:

If you think you should have received it but can’t see it on your bill, contact your electricity supplier directly and ask about the Warm Home Discount for winter 2025–2026.
