Inclusion in Action โ A Powerful Learning Moment
Recently, during a Moving & Assisting training session, something truly special happened.
An individual we support showed a keen interest while the session was being delivered. When invited to take part, they responded with genuine enthusiasm and pride at being included. What followed was a standout moment for everyone involved.
As the session moved into practical techniques, they demonstrated a natural understanding of safe walking support, confidently positioning their hands and moving calmly and correctly alongside a member of staff, without prompts or guidance. Their engagement didnโt stop there; they asked to remain involved and eagerly took part in further activities, including wheelchair techniques.
Traditionally, training sessions are staff focused, which can unintentionally overlook the strengths and abilities of the people we support. This moment challenged that assumption in the best possible way.
Not only did this individual gain confidence and a real sense of achievement, but their involvement also enhanced staff learning, offering a powerful, real time demonstration of good practice rooted in lived experience. It was a reminder that learning works best when itโs inclusive, collaborative, and person centred.
