🏅 Veteran Friendly Framework – Discovery Update
The Beeches Care Home
As part of The Beeches’ journey towards becoming Veteran Friendly, via the Veteran Friendly Framework, the Doncaster care home has begun a focused discovery process to better understand residents’ military connections 🎖️ — recognising that service history is not always captured at the point of admission.
For many veterans, service may feel too far in the past to mention, may not be known by an advocate, or may be something they have chosen not to revisit. To explore this sensitively, Sam, Activity Coordinator, has started informal one-to-one conversations with residents, led entirely at their pace 💬
From her first eight conversations, Sam uncovered veterans, individuals who completed National Service, and residents who are partners or parents of veterans — a powerful reminder of how easily service history can remain hidden without proactive engagement.
This discovery sits within Doncaster’s strong Armed Forces heritage 🇬🇧, supported by organisations including the Danum Gallery, Library and Museum, alongside the leadership of the City of Doncaster Council, the only South Yorkshire council with a dedicated Veteran Coordinator in post.
🔍 Looking ahead
This work now opens the door to meaningful veteran-focused activities, including planned visits to the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry display at the Danum Gallery, celebrating the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Collections Project (2023–2025), supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund 🎟️
This approach ensures veteran identity is recognised, respected and supported — shaping care, activities and community links as The Beeches continues its Veteran Friendly journey 💙
