Who else is aware of their self-sabotage?

Yesterday I was given an opportunity to be part of something creative. I was thrilled - then moments later, anxiety struck. A surge of what ifs came over me. The loudest one: “What if I blow this opportunity?”

I find this question paralysing; it fuels the negative monkey that sits on my shoulders. 🙉

I took Alexander Technique classes for several years, and in moments like this, if I check my posture my shoulders are nearly up to my ears! Letting go of that tension and feeling my shoulders fall can completely shift my perspective — one of those phewww moments 😮‍💨

I love the metaphor of the monkey on your shoulders because it’s so visual and relatable - you can almost feel its weight and chatter.
For me, the way to work with these negative thought patterns is to go into the body.

Physical practices like the Alexander Technique, alongside talking therapies such as CBT and ACT, can be powerful supports for self-sabotage tendencies. We do have the ability to reconnect with our bodies.

The main benefit to EFT is how easily it can be incorporated into daily life. It’s a technique you can learn through a professional and practise on your own. Finding five minutes of solitude to tap and settle your nervous system during a hectic day can entirely improve your mood and performance.

People choose EFT to aid with:

⭐️ Anxiety - Studies have deduced tapping can significantly reduce the feelings of anxiety.
⭐️Depression - Other studies have shown EFT has a positive effect on those struggling with depression.
⭐️Pain - Tapping can assist in reducing headaches, tension and chronic pain.
⭐️Cravings - Tapping can dampen the desire for food and addictive substances.
⭐️Phobias - A small study showed that tapping can also reduce the anxiety around specific phobias.

Is therapy a bit like dating? 🫣💖 Hear me out….

When you’re looking for a partner, it’s unlikely you’ll find the perfect match on the very first date - unless you’re my partner who somehow got it right first time. 🤭

You’re allowed to speak to a few therapists before deciding who feels right, and it’s also important not to make snap judgements after one session. 👥

🤝 Trust often takes time to develop 🤝

Just like in relationships, you may need a little space to relax, open up and see what’s possible when two people work together. In that sense, the therapeutic relationship can grow in much the same way - gradually and at your own pace. 🗣️🌿✨
