THE 6 TASTES OF AYURVEDA πΏ
Sweet β’ Sour β’ Salty β’ Spicy β’ Bitter β’ Astringent
'Rasa' is the Sanskrit word for taste. Ayurveda recognises that each rasa plays a vital role in feeding our mind, body, and senses in their own unique way. From a modern nutritional perspective, they cover all the dietary building blocks like protein, fats, carbs, sugars, etc.
Here are a few examples of the 6 tastes;
πΏ SWEET (builds and nourishes tissues, calms the nerves)
Bananas, beetroot, carrots, almonds, milk, rice, jaggery, cinnamon, grapes
πΏ SOUR (cleanses tissues, activates the mind)
Citrus fruits, alcohol, vinegar, fermented foods, yoghurt, sourdough breads
πΏ SALTY (encourages hunger, relieves congestion)
Celery, seaweed, cured meats, salts, soy sauce, olives
πΏ SPICY (stimulates digestion and nerves)
Chillies, garlic, onions, radishes, ginger, black pepper, cloves, wasabi
πΏ BITTER (detoxifies tissues, purifies the blood)
All leafy greens, rhubarb, coffee, dark chocolate, aloe vera, turmeric, cumin, parsley
πΏ ASTRINGENT (tightens tissues, reduces lymph congestion)
Black + green tea, chickpeas, pomegranate, cranberries, beans, okra, most raw vegetables, chicken
Incorporating all the 6 tastes into your meals wherever possible will encourage satiety, reduce cravings, and decrease the urge to snack between meals.
So give it a go. Bon appetit π
