You do not have to wait for a “last straw”.

Myth: Home care only starts after a fall, illness, or hospital stay.
Fact: Many families put support in place earlier, to keep life steady and reduce pressure.

Early help might look like companionship, meal support, light home tasks, or a check-in visit. It can also give you, as an adult child, clearer visibility of how things are day to day.

If you have a “something’s changed” feeling, start with one conversation and one small step.

A little fresh air can help the day feel more manageable, but it works best when the plan is calm and realistic. This guide is designed for adult children who want to support a parent to get out without it becoming a “big event”.

Keep it short, choose the easiest option, and make space for breaks. Even a brief walk, a garden visit, or a quiet coffee can support routine and confidence over time.

Save this for your next visit, and share it with siblings if you plan together.

Mobility is personal. So is confidence. ♿️

International Wheelchair Day is a reminder that accessibility supports everyday freedom and choice.

If your parent uses a wheelchair, small practical details can help outings feel more manageable: checking step-free routes, allowing extra time, and choosing places with accessible toilets and seating.

It can also help to ask what feels hardest right now. Sometimes it is doorways and kerbs. Sometimes it is confidence after a change in health. Either way, a calm plan and the right support can help them stay connected to the things they enjoy.

Today, ask: “What would make getting out easier?”

If you’re worried about slips, stairs, or getting up from a chair, start with what you’ve noticed, not what you fear.

You could say:
“I’ve noticed moving around feels more tiring lately. Would you be open to looking at a few small changes to make things easier and safer?”

Then take one gentle step together, like adding a brighter hallway light, removing a loose rug, or booking a mobility review. Keeping it practical helps your parent feel listened to and in control.

If siblings are involved, a bit of clarity now can save a lot of hurt later.

Start with a calm chat about what needs doing and what each of you can realistically manage. Agree one shared place for updates (a notes app or group chat) and one regular check-in time, so no one’s carrying it all alone.

If someone can’t do hands-on support, they can still help with calls, shopping orders, or appointment admin.

Save this and set a 15-minute sibling call.

Myth: Home care is only for serious medical needs.
Fact: Many families start with a little support for everyday life.

That could mean help with meals, routines, getting out safely, or simply a familiar face checking in. Often, early support helps people stay comfortable and confident at home.

If you’re unsure whether it “counts”, ask: is your parent coping day to day, or just getting through it?

Save this for later, or share with a sibling.

Last week, we were extremely proud to attend a celebratory event, marking 20 years of Home Instead providing support; whether it be Companionship, Personal Care, Home Help or more

Celebrating our peers, fantastic Key Players and Care professionals; and franchise milestones across the country 🎉

Over the last few months we’ve been busy locally celebrating our team achievements. Whether that may be length of service, gaining training qualifications (or the privilege of baby cuddles)

We are most proud to have such a fantastic and compassionate team

Thank you as always for letting us be part of your lives; it’s an honour 🙌🏻💚
