Since 2022, Surrey County Council has worked with partners across the county to run their Warm Welcome scheme – these are local venues that residents can access for a free hot drink and other support services between November and March.

If you are feeling the cold over the next few days, this is the perfect time to visit a Warm Welcome venue.

Warm Welcome venues are open to all residents and are safe and friendly places in Surrey where you can pop in to keep warm, have a hot drink and enjoy the company of others.

🧠 What really causes migraines?

We know many of our patients live with migraine. This BBC article takes a look at what might be going on in the brain and why migraines can be so complex and difficult to predict:

If you’re affected by migraine, the NHS page has clear, reliable information on symptoms, common triggers, treatments and when to seek medical advice.

👉 NHS migraine information: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/migraine/

If your migraines are frequent, keeping a simple migraine diary (noting sleep, food, stress, hormones and medication) can really help you and your GP spot patterns and plan treatment.

Scientists are inching closer to understanding why migraine occurs, how it can be treated and why it is a chronic, whole-body experience. https://bbc.in/3On8K4Z

Important Safety Update on GLP-1 Medicines

The UK medicines regulator – the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) – has updated guidance for both prescribers and patients taking GLP-1 receptor agonist medications. These medicines (such as semaglutide and tirzepatide) are commonly prescribed for type 2 diabetes, weight management, and cardiovascular risk reduction.

Key points from the updated guidance:
- GLP-1 medicines remain safe and effective for most people when used as prescribed.
- However, there is a small risk of severe acute pancreatitis, a serious inflammation of the pancreas, associated with these medications.
- Patients are encouraged to be aware of the symptoms, which include:
➡️ severe and persistent stomach pain (which may spread to the back)
➡️ nausea and vomiting.
If you experience these symptoms while taking a GLP-1 medicine, seek medical advice promptly.

These updates help patients and healthcare teams recognise rare but serious side effects early.

Being informed helps you get timely care and ensures your treatment remains as safe as possible.

New Scientific Evidence Offers Reassurance about Statin Safety

A major new analysis published in The Lancet has found that the vast majority of side effects commonly blamed on statins are not actually caused by the medication itself. Researchers reviewed data from 19 large clinical trials involving over 120,000 people, and most symptoms listed on statin information leaflets occurred just as often in people taking a placebo as in those taking statins.

This includes effects like memory problems, depression, sleep disturbance, weight gain, nausea and fatigue - none showed a meaningful increase in people taking statins.

Only a very small number of side effects, such as minor changes in liver blood tests, were found to be slightly more common with statins, and these were rare and generally not serious.

Most importantly, the evidence strongly continues to show that statins are safe for most people and can significantly reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular events when prescribed appropriately.
