CQC rates Medwyn Surgery ‘Outstanding’ for Second Time
Medwyn Surgery in Dorking has once again been rated Outstanding overall by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following a routine inspection in September, the second time the practice has achieved the highest possible rating. Only 5 per cent of GP practices in England are rated Outstanding by the CQC.
The CQC praised the practice for being Outstanding in the areas of Caring, Responsive, and Well-Led, and Good for being Safe and Effective. Inspectors described Medwyn as “an exceptionally well-led service providing high-quality care to people living in Dorking,” with a culture based on “listening, learning, and trust.”
In their report, inspectors highlighted Medwyn Surgery’s commitment to reducing health inequalities and its proactive approach to supporting vulnerable and hard-to-reach groups, including homeless patients, refugees, autistic people, and people with learning disabilities. They also recognised the practice’s emphasis on staff wellbeing, innovation and professional development across all roles.
The report found that:
• 79% of patients found it easy to get through by phone, compared to a national average of 53%.
• 90% of patients rated their overall experience as good or very good, well above the national average.
• The practice received 587 positive patient comments praising the care, professionalism, and service of its team. Patients consistently reported they were treated with kindness and compassion.
• Innovative community projects such as the Medwyn Carers Network, Men’s Shed, and MASH (Men Alone Self Help) were helping to build stronger social connections and raise awareness around mental health.
Reflecting on the rating, Dr Stewart Tomlinson, GP Partner at Medwyn Surgery, said:
“We are incredibly proud to have been rated Outstanding by the CQC for the second time. This achievement reflects the dedication, compassion, and professionalism of every member of our team.
At Medwyn, we’ve always believed that excellent care goes beyond the consultation room. It’s about knowing our community, listening to our patients, and continuously finding better ways to support their health and wellbeing. We are deeply grateful to our patients for their trust and to our staff for their unwavering commitment to making Medwyn a place where everyone feels valued and cared for.”
The partnership between staff and patients is echoed by Adrian Maybanks, Chair of the Medwyn Patient Participation Group:
“I am delighted that Medwyn Surgery has been rated Outstanding by the CQC again, reflecting the dedication and diligence of its staff. The Patient Participant Group (PPG) observes firsthand the commitment, professionalism, and compassion that contribute to this recognition. Medwyn Surgery actively seeks patient feedback and involving patients in the provision of service provided. With this grade it acknowledges the staff’s efforts to support the health and wellbeing of the community. This achievement highlights the effective partnership between staff and patients and Medwyn Surgery’s continued commitment to providing exceptional care.”
