Mannin Doctors - Private GPs

Mannin Doctors - Private GPs The Island's first Private GP centre. Give yourself the time you need. No need to leave your NHS GP.
(1)

We are two of the Island's GPs who feel that currently the NHS services do not give patients enough time to have a meaningful discussion. We know this is not the fault of the local GPs, but we decided to offer an alternative way of consulting a doctor. This means You can decide how much time you want to spend with us and what topics you would like to discuss. We don't have any government targets to meet so we can fully focus on what matters to you. We are currently going to work at Manx Medical Imaging at Village Walk, Onchan, before moving to out own premises.

Four years ago today on Valentine’s Day we opened our doors 💘🎉
Fast forward to now and we are celebrating 4 years of proudly looking after the Isle of Man.

Today’s clinic is coming to you from underwater, where everything is OK 👌🌊
We did consider underwater appointments but it turns out the WiFi doesn't reach 20 metres and our stethoscopes are not dive rated!

We are back on dry land for the serious stuff, so if something is niggling you please don't leave it. Message us or call the surgery and we will get you booked in

Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at Mannin Doctors 💙

One honest conversation can change everything.
A week. A month. A life.

Most people do not need perfect words. They need a start.
“I’m not myself.”
“I’m struggling.”
“I don’t know what I need, but I can’t carry it alone.”

If you are worried about someone, don’t wait for the right moment. Create one.
A walk. A cuppa. A message that simply says, “How are you really?”

And if you are the one holding it together on the outside while falling apart on the inside, please hear this: support is not a luxury. It is healthcare.

You are not a burden. You are a person.

If something is worrying you don’t sit on it, hoping it goes away

I see this all the time. People wait, Google, talk themselves out of it, then arrive weeks later with the same concern, plus anxiety on top.

Most of the time, a check brings reassurance.
And when it is something that needs attention, early action changes outcomes.

Things I would never ignore:
chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations
a new lump or persistent swelling
unexplained bleeding
ongoing change in bowel habit
weight loss without trying
ongoing fatigue that is not improving
anything that is new, persistent, and not your normal

Trust your instinct. If you have noticed it, it matters.

Sleep is the foundation, if you feel awful start here this week

If you feel awful right now, start with sleep.
Not supplements. Not a dramatic reset. Sleep.

In clinic, when people say “I’m exhausted all the time” the first thing I look at is the basics. Sleep is where your body does its repair work.

Try this for 7 days:
wake up at the same time most days
get daylight within an hour of waking
caffeine before midday only
no scrolling in bed, phone out of reach
keep the room cool and dark
if you can’t sleep, get up for 10 minutes then return

If you do this and you still feel wiped out, low, breathless, dizzy, or your sleep is disrupted by pain, snoring, sweats, panic, or frequent waking, then it is worth a proper review.

Start simple. Then go deeper if needed.

Today is World Cancer Day (4 February 2026) and it is a good moment to be brutally honest about something most people try to ignore.

The body whispers before it screams.
Cancer is not always dramatic. Often it is small changes that you explain away until months have passed.

Changes you should not ignore.

If any of these are new for you and persist or worsen get checked:
A lump or swelling anywhere that does not go away
Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite
A cough hoarseness or breathlessness that hangs around
Blood where it should not be (poo, wee, cough, vomit, vaginal bleeding)
Changes in bowel habits or needing to wee more often
A sore that does not heal
A new mole or a mole changing shape, colour or bleeding
Persistent indigestion, difficulty swallowing or ongoing tummy pain
Ongoing fatigue, night sweats or fevers with no clear reason
Pain that is persistent and unexplained

Why early checks matter

Early checks are not about panic. They are about options.
When something is found earlier, treatment is often simpler, recovery can be quicker, and outcomes are frequently better.

The line that saves lives

If you are thinking “It is probably nothing”… that is exactly when you should book the appointment.
You are not wasting anyone’s time. You are protecting your future.

Tired vs Unwell and when to get checked

The January slump is real.
Short days, winter bugs, disrupted routines, money pressure, and that constant feeling you should be doing more.

But there’s a difference between tired and unwell.

🫩Tired often looks like:
you feel flat, foggy, slower than usual
you still function, but everything takes effort
a decent night’s sleep, daylight, food and a walk help a bit

☹️Unwell often looks like:
you are getting worse not better
you cannot do normal tasks without struggling
your symptoms feel different to your usual “winter self”

📋Get checked if:
breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, fainting
fever that isn’t easing
weight loss without trying
you are not functioning at work or at home
low mood most days, for more than two weeks
you have that gut feeling something isn’t right

You don’t need to earn help by suffering first.

If you are shopping for health on social media please pause.

I get it. You are tired. You want the quick fix. Someone pops up with a reel promising energy weight loss, perfect hormones, perfect sleep, and a product link.

💊But medicines, injections, antibiotics, and even some supplements are not harmless because they are trending. The risks are real: wrong dose, poor quality products ,unsafe combinations, and no proper assessment of whether it is appropriate for you.

👩‍⚕️If you are thinking about anything medical, you deserve two things:
A clinician who asks the right questions
A plan that is safe for your body and your history

If you have started something you bought online and you are unsure about it, bring it to us. No judgement. I would always rather you ask early, than deal with a problem later.

Over the weekend, we’ll talk about the January dip fatigue and the difference between “tired” and “something isn’t right”.
