January has been a very busy month at The Foot Health Practice, which is why we’ve been a little quieter on social media. 🦶
We’re seeing a lot of wet athlete’s foot (macerated tinea pedis) at the moment, particularly between the toes. . .
In the photo you can see white, soggy-looking skin between the toes, with softening and breakdown of the skin. This happens when moisture becomes trapped — often from sweaty feet, tight shoes, thick socks or footwear that doesn’t fully dry out. The damp environment allows fungal infection to thrive and weakens the skin barrier. 🧦
Symptoms of wet athlete’s foot can include itching, soreness, whitening of the skin, cracking, and sometimes an unpleasant odour. If left untreated, the softened skin can split, increasing the risk of pain and secondary infection.
Keeping feet clean and thoroughly dry, especially between the toes, is essential, alongside appropriate antifungal treatment. If symptoms persist or keep returning, professional assessment can help get things back under control.
