✨ Another Fungal Nail Transformation ✨

One of my lovely patients has completely transformed the appearance of her nails over the past few months — and the results speak for themselves 👣

After starting a course of oral terbinafine (prescribed by her GP), she committed to regular appointments with me for careful nail reduction and routine callus removal.

Fungal nail infections can take time to treat, and medication alone isn’t always enough to improve the appearance quickly. By combining systemic treatment with consistent professional nail care, we’ve been able to:

✔️ Gradually reduce thickened, dystrophic nail
✔️ Improve comfort in footwear
✔️ Support healthy new nail growth
✔️ Restore confidence

Seeing healthy nail growing through after long-term fungal damage is always so rewarding — for both of us!

✨ Dry skin… or something more? ✨

This “before” photo shows widespread dry, white scaling across the sole — particularly around the heel and arch.

At first glance, it looks like simple dry skin. But this pattern can actually be consistent with chronic (moccasin-type) athlete’s foot, a fungal infection that often:

🔎 Affects most or all of the sole in a “dry sock” pattern
🔎 Causes fine, powdery scaling
🔎 Doesn’t improve (and can worsen) with moisturiser alone
🔎 May be present on both feet
🔎 Can coexist with fungal nail changes

Athlete’s foot isn’t always red, itchy or between the toes. The dry type is commonly mistaken for dehydration of the skin.

In this case, the fungal infection was treated first.
Only once the infection was eradicated did we begin a structured hydration plan to restore the skin barrier.

👉 Moisturising a fungal infection alone will not fix the problem — correct diagnosis is key.

The “after” shows healthy, comfortable skin following targeted treatment and appropriate hydration.

If your feet are persistently dry, flaky or not responding to creams, it may not just be dryness.

January has been a very busy month at The Foot Health Practice, which is why we’ve been a little quieter on social media. 🦶

We’re seeing a lot of wet athlete’s foot (macerated tinea pedis) at the moment, particularly between the toes. . .

In the photo you can see white, soggy-looking skin between the toes, with softening and breakdown of the skin. This happens when moisture becomes trapped — often from sweaty feet, tight shoes, thick socks or footwear that doesn’t fully dry out. The damp environment allows fungal infection to thrive and weakens the skin barrier. 🧦

Symptoms of wet athlete’s foot can include itching, soreness, whitening of the skin, cracking, and sometimes an unpleasant odour. If left untreated, the softened skin can split, increasing the risk of pain and secondary infection.

Keeping feet clean and thoroughly dry, especially between the toes, is essential, alongside appropriate antifungal treatment. If symptoms persist or keep returning, professional assessment can help get things back under control.

What exactly is a verruca? 👣

Verrucae (plantar warts) are small growths that appear on the soles of the feet, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They often develop where pressure is applied — like under the heel or ball of the foot — and can sometimes look or feel just like a corn.

Unlike corns, verrucae are viral, meaning they can spread through skin contact or shared surfaces such as showers and swimming pools. They may have tiny black dots (but not always) and can feel like you’re “walking on a stone.”

If you have a painful or persistent area of hard skin that doesn’t seem to improve, it’s always worth getting it checked — what looks like a corn might actually be a verruca!

👣 At The Foot Health Practice, we can help identify and manage verrucae safely and effectively.

🦶 Do you know the symptoms of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)?

PAD occurs when the arteries that supply blood to your legs and feet become narrowed — reducing blood flow and making it harder for wounds to heal. It’s more common than you might think, especially in people over 50 or those with diabetes or a history of smoking.

Common symptoms include:
🔹 Cramping or pain in your calves, thighs, or buttocks when walking (that eases with rest)
🔹 Cold or pale feet and toes
🔹 Slow-healing cuts or sores on the legs or feet
🔹 Weak or absent pulses in the feet
🔹 Shiny or thinning skin, and loss of hair on the legs
🔹 Numbness or tingling in the feet

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to get checked — early diagnosis and management can make a big difference to your circulation and overall foot health.

👣 At The Foot Health Practice, we’re trained to assess circulation and can advise when further vascular testing is needed.

📍 Book an appointment or message us for advice — your feet are telling you more than you think!
