Suicide down to Zero

Suicide down to Zero Suicide Down to Zero was founded in 2014 in Northern Ireland. A suicide-safe world, where zero is the only acceptable number.

We work at community level to prevent suicide, reduce stigma, and support people to find help, hope, and connection.

It's hard to believe February is past and the bees are back. Longer evenings more opportunities . Spend a bit more time outside this week. It feels great. πŸ˜ŠπŸ™

We need to talk about su***de.

Not in whispers. Not with shame. Not as something distant that only happens somewhere else.

If someone wants to end their life, they can almost always be helped to stay alive. That matters. That truth saves lives.

Most people who feel suicidal do not truly want to die. They want the pain to stop. They want relief. They want someone to notice. To listen. To care enough to stay.

Asking someone if they are thinking about su***de will not put the idea in their head. It can open a door. It can be the first step toward hope.

Let us choose to have the hard conversations.
Let us check in.
Let us stay curious about the people we love.
Let us take every sign seriously.

If you are struggling right now, you are not weak and you are not alone. Help is available.

In the UK you can call Samaritans on 116 123, free, 24 hours a day.
You can also visit sdz.org.uk to learn more about how to support someone or how to get support yourself.

Staying silent costs too much.
Staying connected can save a life.

It's important to hold a place for people to talk about su***de. I spoke with Philip O'keeffe today. His wisdom and lived experience are remarkable. Thank you for your time today Philip. And thank you for a copy of your book. Analysing Su***de. It is very Northern Irish, with case studies remembering people from here. πŸ™

We need to talk about su***de.

Not in whispers. Not with fear. Not as something we avoid.

Talking about su***de does not put the idea into someone’s head. Asking someone directly if they are thinking about harming themselves can be the very thing that opens the door to honesty, relief and support.

Silence keeps people isolated. Conversation brings connection.

If you are worried about someone, ask them.
If you are struggling yourself, you are not weak and you are not alone.

This page exists to share facts, challenge myths and help move us toward Su***de Down to Zero.

Start the conversation.

Great story told so eloquently and from the heart.

I spent some time recently in the old Down Recorder building, now home to Pepper John’s Men’s Shed, and found myself standing in front of one of the original Linotype machines. It stops you in your tracks. Up close, it is an incredible piece of engineering. Solid cast iron, levers, trays, gears ...
