It stops dangerous electrical chaos so the heart has a chance to reset itself.

⚡ How does a defibrillator actually work?

Here’s something that surprises people:

It doesn’t “jump start” the heart like in the movies.

When someone has a cardiac arrest, their heart is usually stuck in a dangerous rhythm where it is trembling instead of pumping properly.

The defibrillator gives a controlled shock that briefly stops that chaotic rhythm, allowing the heart to reset itself.

That is why CPR is so important - it keeps the oxygen moving while the defib does its job.

We teach this properly in all of our first aid courses so that if the unthinkable happens, you won’t freeze , you will know exactly what to do.

Watching children learn like this is a reminder of just how capable they really are.

When learning is done properly, they understand it, remember it, and can explain it with confidence.

That belief sits at the heart of our Mini Medics and Teen Medics sessions. We don’t simplify for the sake of it. We focus on building confidence, calm decision-making, and practical skills that stay with them.
